I came across this article while link surfing. Does Roger Maris belong in the HOF before Mcquire, Sosa, Bonds etc? I think so

It was also a different day back then when 500 homers and a .300 average wasn't the measuring stick for power hitters.

I wonder why?

Very true haha

It was a different day. In his "day," he led the league in

home runs once, and finished in the top 5 two other times.

Over the course of his very short career, 9 players had more homers than he did.

So even in his "day," he wasn't really one of the elite sluggers, except for one great year.

I don't believe Maris is a Hall of Famer and don't think

McGwire or Sosa ever will be either. I do think Bonds is and I think he'll get in eventually.

Numbers aren't everything. This prompted me to as my 14 year old if they had heard of George Brett, Robin Yount, and Eddie Murray. All of them are in the HOF, but she didn't know them. She actually thought that Eddie Murray was the voice in Shrek. She knew who Roger Maris was though. It is the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Stats.

The HOF isn't for "names" it's for the very best players

Roger Maris is well known for his 61 season, heck there's even a movie about it. The fact is though outside of that he only had 2 other seasons where you could even argue he was one of the best players in the game and even those 2 years could be considered a stretch. Every other season he played was pedestrian at best. Unless you can tell me what years outside of 60-62 he played anything close to what is considered a hall of fame level. To me 3 good years in a career of 12 is not hall of fame worthy.

Maris is a no brainer. Are Johnny Unitas's stats impressive today? Are Bart Star's? Yes I realize that is a different sport.

I have to wonder if you are old enough to have seen any of these three play...

Pretty much no one of any age thinks that Roger Maris

Is a Hall-of-Famer. Here are the criteria:

"Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played."

Maris was one of the top players in baseball for a couple of years. He wasn't even the best player on his own team in those years (Mickey Mantle was). The rest of his career he was not a special player at all. No one has ever gotten in the baseball HOF based on two really good seasons.

Do you think the people that vote for HOF ever saw him play?

He never got more than 43% of the vote.

Cheating is cheating. If a student gets caught cheating on an exam the teacher doesn't just throw out the questions that he cheats on, they throw out the whole thing.

I remember the 61 - but he was a flash-in-the-pan IMO. I don't think it's HOF worthy unless you also do something for many years.

For me - until Pete Rose is admitted into the HOF, they should just shut the dayum place down.

He should be in the Hall of Fame on his 61 homer year alone.
