Is Paris more overrated than SEC Football?

I didn’t want this to overshadow what our athletes were doing in the Olympics so I waited until after the closing ceremony to post, but this needs to be discussed. Paris has to be the most overrated city in the world.
Granted I’ve never been there but I did hook up with a French girl at a bar in Atlanta after a Céline Dion concert in 2009. She didn’t shave her armpits and smelled bad. I’ve dated plenty of girls that don’t smell good, but the French girl didn’t even make an effort and was very rude afterwards.
Even though I have fond memories of the night, she epitomizes what I think of Paris. It seems like everyone has been there, it smells badly, and the people are notoriously rude. But for some reason everybody pretends it’s great. They don’t even have a single Applebees. For real, let that sink in.
I honestly thought SEC football was the most overrated thing in America, but after the Olympics I think Paris might be worse.
Go Tigers!

Paris is dope. One of my fave cities.
I also do like cities though. You can take the kid out of Powdersville… and he might just like Paris.
I also love London, Barcelona, Rome, and NYC as far as big cities are concerned.
Lived in SF and hated lividn there.

San Fran is a labor city where most work around the harbors and the warehouses taking in the goods that's coming from across the pond. Folks with just a high school education can bring home a pretty good paycheck working the harbor and the harbor warehouses...

Just went there a couple of months ago. It's certainly not where I would want to live, but it was a good place to see. Paris is definitely a tourist destination for those of you that like history or the arts. I doubt very seriously I ever go back again, but I'm glad we went.

spent cleaning up the Seine and it was still a filthy sewer that they should not have used for distance swim events. You know there are other rivers that could have been used but they were going to do it there no matter who it hurt or killed.

TV, social media, and movies paint a very romanticized idea of what Paris is, so it's not uncommon for people to have a over-inflated or unrealistic idea of what the city is really like.
First, Paris is a very densely populated city with over 2.2 million people and millions of tourists visiting every year which, as you might expect, strains the cities resources. Pollution and litter can be an issue in certain areas. For whatever reason, Paris dog owners don't pick-up the poo after their dogs make a deposit. It's everywhere, it smells, and it's a real problem. A insufficient number of public restrooms is also an issue so it's not uncommon for people to urinate in the streets, alleys, or breezeways which only adds to the stench. Lastly, with so many people using public transportation regularly, delays are not uncommon.
I actually like Paris. It reminds me of NY and Chicago. While it's not always rosy, it's not all terrible either. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle.
Just my .02 cents.

We were in Paris about 3 weeks before the opening ceremony. I will preface this by saying I am an old country boy and not a fan of being in any big city, at least not for very long. We were only there for 2 nights and one full day. For me that was plenty. I enjoyed seeing the iconic sites like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame (although we couldn’t go inside), and the Palace at Versailles. We took a 2+ hour tour of Versailles and that was very interesting. My wife wanted to sit at an outdoor cafe for dinner (that is her vision of Paris) so we did that one night. As some others said, it was extremely crowded and yes, I saw dog c r a p on the sidewalks more than once. For me, it was something that was cool to see once, but I saw a lot of other places in Europe, mostly along the Moselle River, that I would rather go back to visit. I am probably not the best person to evaluate this city because I just don’t like traffic and crowded cities. I have never been to NYC or LA and have no plans to go. I had to spend some time in and around Chicago for work and don’t see any need to go back there. We lived near and I worked in Miami and the traffic there was awful. I hate going to Atlanta for any reason. If you like big cities you’d probably love Paris. It’s just not my thing.

We took a cruise through there and it was great. Thinking about going back and spending a week somewhere between Bernkastel and Cochem. Love the small villages along the river through that stretch.

I have no personal experience of my own, but the people who have visited that I know have said it's "overrated". Everyone seems to agree on that point.
Even my sister who's a hippie chick and has been there 2x said it's just "ok", and that the people there can be rude jerks.

I don't know if that is a fair comparison. I think comparing it to one of the overrated teams in the overrated SEC would be better. Paris is Texas A&M. All the old money and power you can dream of, but in the end it just doesn't live up!

You answered your own question with "granted I've never been there" which gives you no standing to have an opinion. If you have never had anything but vanilla ice cream, how would you know butter pecan, chocolate or moose tracks for example are not great? I have been there several times and Paris is a great city, easy to get around in with wonderful cathedrals and museums.

I'll have to take your word for it, those are lines I don't cross. I dated a French exchange student from Pau during my days at Clemson and she had neither. She was drop dead gorgeous. And that accent.

We enjoy visiting Paris and have been 4 times. Very cheap to eat and drink if you avoid tourist spots. Bartenders and waitstaff are top notch at most places and smaller places are almost always family run.

A day in Paris to visit Montmartre, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe is all you need. That, along with a good meal can be done in one day. I’ve been twice, and I’m going back next March but mainly to visit Normandy, a bucket list location.

Yes, clearly you’ve never been there. It is an amazing city with wonderful food, sights, history, and women. The only rude people were the obese Americans wearing t-shirts and Bermuda shorts, refusing to speak French

Hmmmm……pretty city, old city, historic city, expensive city. If you ask English, Scots, Irish, Dutch, Germans or Pols, they’ll tell you that Parisians are rude. It’s not about the French, it’s Parisians. They’re well known for it. That actually made me feel a little better about it. All large cities have less polite more aggressive people. Paris is no different in that regard.
SEC is more overrated.

People either love Paris or hate it. I have been there alot and like it less every time I go (mostly for business). It is either touristy and with rude natives or has rude natives and dangerous as well as filthy dirty...as in human excrement dirty. It has been about 5 years since I have been there and I am told by several different friends that live there that they have made significant strides to clean it up.
Still, is is not my favorite city in Europe by a long shot.

Let me add that the countryside of France can be incredibly wonderful with people that are not burned out on tourists. STill a a general statement I think the French are the most arrogant people the world has ever created, but still way nicer than Chinese tourists. Chinese tourists take the cake as being the worst people group you will ever encounter.
