In 1982 I injured my shoulder playing tennis, had surgery, and had to go to Jervey Athletic Center for rehab. Fred Hoover was the new trainer then. On my first day there coach Howard came down to the training room and asked me who I was and what I was doing there. I told him my name was David Howard, and he asked me if we were any kin. Well, I told him my father is Frank Howard, and he leaned over, got right in my face, and said in that deep gruff voice "What did you say boy?!!!!". Well I about crapped myself. I explained my dad's name was Frank Howard also and we proceeded to talk for about 20 minutes. Everyday I was down there after that he made a special point to come over and talk with me. He was truly a great guy. Did any of y'all have the pleasure of meeting him?
When he was AD it's said that there was an effort made to establish a crew/rowing team. Supposedly, Coach Howard said something like, "No way I'm going to approve a team where you sit on your butt and go backwards!"
I met him in the early Fall of 1966, due to my being a

member of the Cheerleading Squad, and subsequently, saw and spoke with him on a number of occasions.
After a pep rally in the amphitheater and having been tossed into the library reflection pool, I exited soaking wet to the feet of both Coach Howard and Dean Walter Cox. Both burst out laughing, and Coach said, "Boy, if you turned sideways, nobody would see you, 'cause you's skinny as a rail!"
Some years later, I saw him and Dean Cox again at some meeting they were attending here in Columbia, and the Coach laughed and said, "You's still skinny like a rail!" Although stunned that he remembered that, the remark brought a gale of laughter among us. Never have forgotten that.
One other indelible memory was him introducing me to Bear Bryant after a home game against Bama, which they won and also, included Danny Ford on the team. The two were talking on our sideline post-game, and I moseyed over with Coach Howard introducing me to the Bear. Never have forgotten that either.

My parents’ tailgate spot was on Williamson Road across from Fike. The nearest restrooms were in Fike, and there was usually a long line at each urinal. I finally made it to the front when I heard a gruff voice behind me say, “You better move over, boy, or I’m gonna #### in your pocket!” Never knew I could cut off a stream that fast!
