If you thought ACC basketball officials were a joke

Jan 24, 2022, 11:09 PM

Stanford went to the line 41 times and made 32, including 3 with no time on the clock, to beat Bobby Hurley’s Arizona State team who only went 7-9 from the line Saturday night. Hurley got teed up after the half when his team only shot 1 free throw in the first half and fined $20k by the conference for going after the refs at the end of the game. I probably would have had $100k in fines if that was my team. And all this was in an empty arena so it’s not like the refs were intimidated by the crowd.

Well, we were whistled for an ACC record 41 fouls and eneded the game with 4 players on the court in Chapel Hole once upon a time.

I was at that game with my boss using our owner's corporate tickets 4 rows from the floor across from the benches. The blue bloods around us complained the whole game that the officials were bias against the holes. It was hilarious when Coach Barnes started taking off his coat and tie to go into the game when Clemson was down to four players and the refs kept asking him to send a player on.

And this was the beginning of my strong dislike for ACC basketball. Cannot get a fair game at Duke or UNC. So obvious it is sickening. Another reason to like Barnes. He would call out the bull shizz.

That game led to a sit down conference between Coach Barnes and Coach Smith in the commissioners office the following week. First time anyone stood up to Smith for receiving ‘favorable’ calls from the refs. I was a big Barnes fan before this encounter and an even bigger one afterwards. Wish we still had him!

I am glad to see Hurley on that side for once. Now he knows how everyone except the Tarholes felt playing Duke.

Pretty much lumps you in with most who

misunderstand these "stats". Unless of course you really watched it all and saw obvious disparities. But the way it works usually is when you have better players, they draw more fouls - sometimes many more - because they drive, pass, and shoot better so that the weaker teams and players have to foul them - a lot. Whereas on the other side, on offense, the weaker offensive players just aren't as good at shooting, driving, dribbling, so there's no real need to foul them. Occasionally, maybe even rarely, is it really about "home cooking" as some like to call it. Hope this helps.

Oh I have watched and sometimes it’s the league protecting their own top tier teams. One should look at free throw disparities over the last 15-20 years of Tarheel home games. Consistently get most questionable calls. If they are so much better than everyone not real sure why other teams spend the money to travel and play there seeing they are inferior and are 10-15 points in the hole just on free throws.
