playbook and abandon balance? OR does DJ get in better shape, learn to better read defenders, and we run a modified version of the zone/read offense once the WR corps is healthy?

He made some GREAT throws last night that were dropped, and he made some 50/50 throws that the WRs didn't "high point" aggressively. He also had a couple of bad balls, but he is much more accurate than early in the season. Even though he picked up yards, his runs looked like he was competing in the Dizzy Bat game.

He is not a dual threat guy. Looking back on the early part of the season, it's strange that we tried to make him just that. All of the recruiting reports had him as a pocket passer, but seems like we didn't want to acknowledge that.

SO....what gives? Do we stay on this course of a power run game with play action with a few RPOs mixed in OR does DJU change as a player (along with the improvement in WRs)?

Go Tigers!

It’s simple. If DJ does not step up his game (improve) before next year he will not be QB1. For his sake I hope he is great next year but time will tell

It is not so much that DJ needs to improve (but he will) for Clemson to contend for the CFP again. It is the receivers who drop passes that hit both hands, they don’t high point the ball, can’t block and don’t fight for yardage after the catch.
Clemson went to the run game because they couldn’t find a receiver to catch the ball except Will Brown.

We have seen Venables do that routinely as our DC.

Elliott has not shown much of a willingness to change to any significant degree. Dabo hasn’t really seemed to either. They are both of the “this is what we do” and “this is who we are” mindset.

Our improvement next year will likely hinge on whether or not the two of them are willing to adapt and make changes. If they are, I think we can contend for a conference championship and possibly a playoff berth. If they aren’t, then we are likely looking at a 3-4 loss season.

Agree completely

DJ needs to put in a lot of work on accuracy, reading defenses and going thru his targets

TE must adapt to what we have. DJ is not TL or Watson. Completely different player.

Not confident the coaching staff will do that at all.

Our talent alone with our opponents and decent execution will get us 10 wins maybe a conference championship, but not success in CFP unless with get the most from what we have which is pretty dang good talent

What about the two back sets? That is called adjusting to what you have. It happened very late in season, but it happened.

Yeah, along with the under center power plays. TE has clearly adjusted to make DJ more of a passer than a runner, and has removed most RPO’s. The screens have also seen a significant drop in getting called since the edge blocking has been atrocious.

We’ve slowly become a run first team this season. I’d say that’s adjustment.

This of course ignores the obvious: you recruit players to your system so of course you will play your system. We will see with the QB returning, but by all accounts the West Texas high schooler is the real deal, and he is entering in January. Ask Kelly Bryant if Swinney is willing to pull the plug.

If you could not see how we adapted last night to a run oriented TE oriented attack perhaps you should not comment on a football thread. It is inexcusable that a fan be this uneducated about football yet make public comments like this

I assume the original comment related to the entire season's approach and not just the USC game. It took TE 12 games to make a significant change in the offensive game plan...

I think if DJ starts next year, we have to adapt to more of a power run game as opposed to RPO’s where he is not a threat.

It was a complete failure on the coaches part for not adapting the offense before the season. They knew DJ was not a threat in the run game. They have done a few things since that have helped.

We also need to somehow get 2 to 3 more QBs in the room. Helms should not be on a scholarship and the fact that TP could not get in the game with the way DJ was playing speaks volumes. Via the portal or put out another offer we need a few more capable bodies.

If DJU is our quarterback, and T.E. the offensive coordinator I see similar results.
First off ,IMO,DJU is a good quarterback but is not a a quarterback than can take us back to the CFP's. He is just too inconsistent.
As regards to Tony, as the O.C. I have seen too many times where he was given "solo" credit for our two National Championships. But many of you forget we also had Jeff Scott. Maybe we need another set of eyes. Just saying.
So if Tony is to stay, he needs to be more creative, stick to what is working( i.e. the run game) ,and if needed, sit his quarterback, even for a series or two, if things are not working.

Ideally adjustments would be made but when the QB has only show the ability to throw two types of passes all season (screens and heaving it 40 yards downfield) I'm not sure adjustments are going to solve the problem. I mean we just beat a team with 99 yards of passing offense, so its not like DJ has suddenly turned the corner. The big difference is that we've given up on even asking him to perform like a starting QB should and are basically game planning like we have the backup in the game and we are trying to win without him screwing anything up. You can bet the farm we won't be beating any good to elite teams next season with fewer than 100 yards passing and I hope the coaches know that as well.

DJ is going through a Sophomore Slump. I believe he will take the next step next season. I do believe Cade Klubnik will get plenty of snaps during the entire game, not just the 4th Q like we have seen in the past. I’m looking forward to next season.

We'll start off with our base offense next year. Unless DJ loses weight and/or gets faster we may trim some QB runs off the playbook. This was a very weird year and CFB and weird for Clemson. The offense was a mash unit and DJ hasn't had receivers to throw to for half the season. The other half of the season was mostly OL issues.

The biggest thing this team needs is to get healthy. Not a new QB, not new coaches, not a new playbook. Get health.

We were pretty healthy at the beginning of the year when we were struggling against horrible teams and losing to terrible teams. Health is always big for depth, but that's not as big a problem as DJ, Elliott, Streeter, and the playbook.

I can't believe we still have DJ fanboys and apologists. We are now at the end of the season. Out of 106 quarterbacks with enough passes per game, he's: #105 in passer rating, #102 in accuracy, tied for #104 in yards per attempt, #98 in passing touchdowns, and has thrown the 31st most interceptions. And keep in mind that 47 of those quarterbacks have not played as many games. He's horrific in every stat. And contrary to what people say on here, he's not improved at all, but fallen deeper and deeper in the stats. He's now statistically the worst QB in Clemson history, overtaking Streeter. Some of you want to blame the lack of receivers, but teams like Vandy, Duke, and Old Dominion are outperforming Clemson in the passing game. If Clemson's backup receivers can't compete with theirs, then that points to even more serious issues.

Look, I was a huge DJ fanboy. I thought he'd be a better passer than TLaw. But for whatever reason, he's now a thoroughbred with a broken leg and he just doesn't have it. He's not getting any better. He can't be the QB next year or Clemson will continue to be an average team, will keep losing recruiting battles, and will slide in mediocrity.

If DJ is the QB next year, it means he's slimmed down and can run the offense. The guy coming in is the polar opposite of DJ. He's a guy that can move in the pocket, run, and extend plays. I think the current version of DJ will have a tough time even beating a heathy TP for the job. We may also bring in an experienced, under recruited guy to compete for the job as well. I think the 1 and 2 guys are going to be neck and neck going into the season and both lightyears better than anything we saw this year.
