If a player leaves midsession, their benefits should

Oct 19, 2021, 9:48 PM

Be cut off immediately. I am not bitter about the portal, but if transferring athletes are still benefiting from their scholarship after they decide to transfer, then they are getting something for free, and are possibly damaging the team (and school) at the same time.

Immediately stopping benefits of school, housing, and food certainly seems like it may slow down some knee jerk reactions and stem the out flow of future starters.

Give the kids a break. It’s just through the rest of the semester, I assume. Either way, making it harder for a 20 year old to go to school doesn’t accomplish much.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like to think like that, too, but they are not “kids”,

Oct 19, 2021, 10:11 PM

they are young adults who need to be able to stop and really consider consequences of their actions.

Protecting the students AND the school needs to be a goal. Right now, the kids have the upper hand.

My daughter at Clemson wants to transfer out of every class she has to work hard in or that she’s making a B in…. I get it…it’s human nature to take the path of least resistance. But the school should not be left holding the bag (like I am!).

Dukes was not going to play this year but every team needs practice players. Transfers are a new normal so get used to it in all sports.

Like you, I believe that something needs to be done to stem the mid season transfers, but I believe that it needs to be approached by deterring the transfers. Attacking it at the educational / social end puts the school in a bad situation.

How do you approach how the young man is doing in his classes whether it is good or bad? If he is doing well should he not be able to get credit for the work that he has put in. If he is doing poorly should he be bailed out by not being responsible for the rest of the semester. I know that there are policies in place for medical issues and deaths to immediate family that could be adapted for the situation, but really don't think that it is warranted.

I proposed in a post that the 4 game transfer rule only apply eligibility wise for the school the red shirt was used at. A couple of alternatives that people gave were having a dead period during the season for entering the portal and going back to sitting out a year but making it a blanket rule to avoid politics of exemptions by the NCAA.

The alternative would be having a kid that doesn't want to

Oct 20, 2021, 7:50 AM

be there sucking up resources and potentially bringing the team down. It's best that they just leave and keep their benefits for the rest of the semester.

I am on the other side of the boat.

I think any school that offers a scholarship should be on the hook for 8 semesters (or graduation) even if the kid never plays a snap in their life. Even if after the first practice the kid quits, cut, hurt or dismissed. It still counts to the scholarship limit of the program. Why?

South Carolina coot behavior. Offer to everyone, don't bother graduating them.

Have you seen the coots trowing out scholarships at kids that might not be HS material (overqualified for the coots). Character issues, etc? No real reason to be in school.

Tossing out schollies and pump/dumping kids is NOT the way a school should operate. It creates zero liability of the school to see the kid graduate. I would rather the school be on the hook to actually graduate kids or have those scholarship take a hit. If the Coots have 40 kids inactive with 7 or more semesters worth of school to go, well that comes out of their total.

So thus at the moment of the scholarship is offered and then accepted, the school is on the hook to get the kid to graduate or be down a scholly. 3 year grads or grad transfers don't count against the count. Now, maybe offering a injury waiver to not count against the scholarship limit but the school is still paying the bill for a degree.

Quitting on your team and jumping into the portal isn't

how an athlete should operate.

Shrug, - I agree it they *shouldn't* work that way, but that is how it works. You are blaming the kid for what? Using what is offered to them? At this point, I am all for the flat 4 years of eligibility. No more redshirts, hardship waivers, etc. On the roster by the first snap of the first game, that is a season spent.

However, which "entity" holds the power? The school/program or the kid? At the end of the day, it is the kids at the weaker bargaining point.

A lot more programs are a LOT more abusive to their players and a lot more will outright lie in order gain any advantage. Tell me if a 18-22 year old kid is going to be able to tell which are honest and which are not.

If ol' Cooty McCootface tells some every kid he is a surefire starter HoF and basically finds his spot 4th on the depth chart, why would you blame a kid for wanting to transfer? Heck, you can work hard and still fine yourself there because coaches do want to hoard talent (that was the way it was done in the past)

I think programs should be on the hook for every scholarship they offer. If ol Cooty McCootface is a bad judge of character and running his program as a mill, well, it should bite the school, not the kid.

Thanks doc for some things for me to think about, but

Oct 20, 2021, 9:21 PM

I hope that there is some way we can figure out how to keep the players that coaches and university have spent much time and resources signing at their university until they can take a minute, breathe, and make a good decision.

I suppose 90% of the transfers would never sniff the field, but I just have an issue with them breaking an agreement and still receiving benefits from said agreement once they decide to leave their team.

And..I agree with u that the university should honor their agreement even if the player stinks and never contributes anything to the team on the field. But that agreement ends when the player quits. The player has the leverage, not the school.

A couple years ago, I read Tennessee offered 350+ for 20 - 25 spots. LSU has actually done similar and a TE committed and when it came to signing day, LSU uncommitted him to make an opening for another player. Just wrong.

From what I've seen from Dabo and the Tigers, they offer their top choices for a position but are honest with the next level player (backup option) and keep their promise to offer them if the 1st choice doesn't work out. What's the old saying, honesty is the best policy.
