You ARE correct! But if you recall back in those days...we were short because the world's oil supply had been used up by us greedy Americans.

It went from $.25 gallon to $.99 during that lie. That would put us at $10 per gallon in this one.

we were short the oil supply because the arabs were punishing us for supporting the Israelis in the '73 war.

Gas has been about the same price over time adjusted for current dollars. 73 saw a true shortage but the price hikes happened later.

Spring of 74 wasn't it? My car sat on the shoulder on 123 between Clemson and Seneca for 3 weeks before I could get a gas can with enough gas to get to the Hess station, of course the battery was dead.

some of us married seniors carpooled from Greenville. We wondered if we would have to steal gas to graduate. Not that we did or would have actually

It was January 1974. Gas based on even or odd last number on plate. Gas was limited.

Yep. Remember parking my car in line at the BP up there close to where Starbucks is now
Would get in line and leave it to go to class cause they would tell you what time they were opening up. Line would be all the way down the hill and past Astro lll

You got gas based on even or odd number of your license plate. Also, we had daylight savings time in the winter. The street lights were on as you walked to 8 o’clock classes in the dark.

that Winter - and I had a Monday night 6:00 to 9:00 class. Went to class in the dark in the morning and left way after dark in the evening.

I’m confused, you might want to reread that post. What you described would be a class that started at 6 AM and got out at 9 PM. That’s a 15 hour class on a Monday. Surely you didn’t mean what you wrote. That would not make sense. That would be like five weeks worth of classes in one day.

I was at Clemson in the early 80s. The earliest class on the schedule was 8:00am. Technically I think 8:05.

“Siphoning” was a thing kids. People would take a piece of a hose and open your gas tank and suck on the hose to start stealing gas from your car!! That might have been the catalyst for the modern day fuel door release latch inside your car.

I’m 99.99% sure that was exactly the reason for locking gas caps.

Naw, they added "locks" to the fuel cap first, then that was deemed to expansive and then they did the releases in-vehicle much later on... as well as other options

Plus, if you ever had to re-key you car, that fuel-cap key was a PITA

during the early 70's gas crisis how in the world will people afford gas at 45 cents-a-gallon.

Luckily, I had a close friend, who owned a station, and he let me know when he was getting refilled so I could get there early to top off. Problem was I had an Olds Toronado V-8 that burped every time it saw a station, getting about eight to ten miles-a-gallon, but with a monster tank.

I filled up a little after six this morning after another friend operating a station near the Lake Murray dammmmm let me know she had been refilled late last night. Before I left, the cars were lining up.

The 70's crisis was based upon an OPEC oil embargo, which prompted hoarding.
