I used to feel really Bad for Coach Cliff Ellis

He lost all of his hair trying to keep up with and compete against some of the greatest minds and players in College Basketball history. It was an impossible task, but he occasionally kept it respectable. One time we almost beat Duke at home, and another time he lost a close one to FSU because they hit a miracle 3-pointer from half-court with the time running out. Ellis also lost his vision drawing up plays and watching recruiting videos, and he eventually needed thicker glasses, you could tell he poured himself into it.
Anyway, you Knew Coach Ellis cared because he lost a lot of hair and his vision for this program. When I see coaches who do not lose hair or vision, it makes me question their commitment. Look no further than Jerry Tarkanian, Gene Keady, Larry Davis, Gregg Popovich, Cliff Ellis, etc, if you want to know who was/ is trying hard..

Tarkanian shaved his head. He had a beautiful head of hair. He looked liked David Coverdale from White Snake when he grew it out.

I could see the Cliff’s hairs falling out from my vantage point in the stands. It reminded me of the time Andre Agassi’s wig was falling apart at the French Open.

History. Fortunately, Alopecia, albeit devastating for those afflicted, is a very treatable disease. But in the '80s it might have well been a death sentence if you were jockeying for a promotion at work and attempting to maintain the respect of your family.

except the balding Cliff Ellis had Clemson teams who Ron Cherry’d Coach K’s Devils when they visited LJ.
Winning in 88, 90, 92. Now I feel gross for correcting the narrative and feel overly mangey. Please forgive me.
Also - in the pic of Cliff you shared - he reminds me a bit of Jad Dean. I wonder if Jad is starting to look like Coach Cliff.

Now that is funny. Ol' Jad never looked like a football player. However, Renfrow didn't either.

I wonder what he is up to now. I thought he was working in the golf industry, but I could be wrong.

Cliff Ellis was one of the best coaches Clemson ever had
ACC regular season championship, 1989-1990 Sweet 16 trip, 1989-1990 ACC Coach of the year, TWICE (1987 and 1990)
Gave us Horace Grant, Dale David, Eldon Campbell, Chris Whitney, Wayne Buckingham.
Got the win over #5 Duke in the "fire marshall" game in 1990.
His first game coaching at Clemson was my first game attending at Clemson.

fire marshal game was not 1990, i was a freshman in 89-90 and was there. the fire marshal game i think was 1980 with people sitting in the aisles . either way , Ellis had to compete with big boy ACC teams all ranked highly nite after nite. The current ACC is a shred of what is was back then. I remember Maryland being good,UNC, Duke, Ga Tech, NCState, all these were loaded teams. Wake and UVA were pretty good also.

He was one of the best we ever had. He did beat Duke and it gave us the regular season ACC title. However we did not win the tournament. I was there. Dale Davis and Elden Campbell the twin towers helped us to win.

He was just on ACC PM talking about his career. Going to be at Clemson Monday night for UNC game. Has new book called "Life's Just a Dance."
