If DRad leaves, there will be talk of a “nationwide search” and several candidates will likely be interviewed, but ultimately the position will be filled from within the athletic department.
If Venables leaves, we will likely promote someone on the defensive staff to be the new DC.
Clemson is so eager to maintain the unprecedented success we have had that there is a fear of bringing someone from completely outside the program. What if they don’t fit the culture? What if Dabo doesn’t like them? Stuff like that dominates the decision making process.
I get that. We want “Clemson people.” We want good fits. But as David Hood noted in a recent article, this is a very tumultuous time in college athletics (and in society at large) and any new hires should be at the forefront of these trends.
I don’t know the answer. I just hope Clemson doesn’t go too conservative and “safe” if we find ourselves needing to make key hires. That approach has really hurt us in the past.
You could be wrong. On the AD search I feel that we have quality candidates within the department, including the “Dabo” hire of Graham Neff. I for one would prefer to take a chance on a young innovator and see what happens.
