I Hesitate to Post Ill of The Departed But It Seems Like The

Whole Mojo of the program has changed from walking on eggshells and keeping up the narrative with DJ and Streeter. The program does have as family an atmosphere as one can get in the cut throat world of CFP, but everything now feels like it did pre-DJ since Dabo made the hard calls he needed to do.

There is an unspoken swagger and confidence that I think will make this program crank like it did in the 2015-2018 era. I think this team comes out the gate HOT and smokes FSU at home. What concerns me most would be if we then had to play them a second time later in the year for the ACCCG. Go Tigers!

What really happened. There is more to this story and I know things are on the mend now, but I am still curious.

I picture Streeter having had a meltdown or the whole issue with what transpired with DJ/Cade didn't fully come to light until it was too late for Dabo. Even still, I did not expect Dabo to make the move he did so I'm grateful he's less the "loyal at all costs" he was made out to be last season.

"DJ is the guy and make it so," kinda deal. He did that, but didn't read between the lines so to speak meaning that "if" he can't get him there then you better have a linear path, which he really didn't. Maybe Dabo held hope too long and Streeter was afraid to disappoint him.

I heard that Dabo went off on Steeter for the lack of development in Cade and Streeter blamed it on having to put so much time into DJ. And there was a lot of turmoil between Streeter, dabo, and Richardson

This makes sense considering the struggles Cade had against Tennessee. I know he had freshman moments, but Dabo was clearly unhappy with his decision making at times.

Happy to see the pedal on the floorboard with the wheel in a new direction. The season can't come fast enough.

Kyle's take was. My guess is he was rowing in the same direction of concern we all were. That end of season wrap-up likely had some finger-pointing. Have to give it to Dabo for keeping his CEO hat on with a legacy as well as friend.

The difference in Deshaun and Trevor’s stats? They didn’t need more because they put games away. DJ limited the offense so much he couldn’t get separation to let his backup get playing time. There are lies, #### lies and statistics.

The most impactful issue that kept the O from that separation you mention was not having a top 10 defense as CU had in 2015 & 2019. Two games, Furman & La Tech, that should have seen Clemson's defense throttle the opponent, ended up lingering far too long. Coupled with Cade's poor performances, DJU was beckoned off the bench to right the ship in both games.

Furman game, DJU goes 3 of 3 to start the game, 3 drives resulting in 3 TDs. The defense gives up a long FG drive and then two other long drives. At 21-3, Furman's 70 yard drive thankfully ends in a red zone turnover. With momentum and ~6 mins left before half, the staff throws the keys to Cade who doesn't burn clock, doesn't flip the field and gives the ball back to Furman in 5 plays. Furman goes 60+ yards in under 2 mins to make it 21-9. Cade gets shown the bench, staff reinserts DJU and he immediately takes the Tigers 75 yards in under 2 mins to make it 28-9. DJ ended 1H 4 for 4, 4 TDs in 4 drives. Dabo goes top rope on the D after that game and again the following week.

LaTech with 5 mins left in the 3rd, DJU makes it 34-6 and is done for the day, right? 2 consecutive drives, Cade goes 4 and out, then 3 and out, while LaTech is putting 2 TDs up on the defense making the game 34-20 and DJU is once again forced back into the game. After thinking his day was over DJU takes the reins and the Tigers 70 yards for a TD, reasserting Clemson's hold on the game, 41-20.

SID & Tim Bourrett put out some great feel good stats, but truth be told DJU performed very well in those first 7, while the staff, team and fans were feeling little to no pain. It was pretty comical the number of forgive me for I have sinned posts littering the boards as many were coming to grips with their guilt for poor mouthing DJ.

I didn't posts the stats to necessarily laud DJU, but to demonstrate how the program, players and staff were all on the same page through 7 games. What took place starting with Cuse is storied. The thing that I don't think gets enough play, Dabo didn't just replace an OC, he landfilled the Clemson Offense, which he branded when theChad joined the program. Early on media and others made comments about Chad's offense and Dabo was quick to jump on the podium to mark his territory making sure people understood it as the Clemson O.

The baby went out with the bath water.

TL and DW could hit a receiver moving latterally.

1

Jun 8, 2023, 10:41 AM

DJ never could. Coaches asked TL and DW to hit laterally moving targets. They didn't call those plays for DJ.

One point I would like to make about that...

3

Jun 8, 2023, 11:03 AM [ in reply to Some truth to that, but not nearly as impactful as some... ]

Every time Cade went in, the 2's and 3's also went in. I know...that's who he practiced with...but they didn't help him out.

Which leads to the second point, one that Cade himself let out of the bag after the ACCCG...he hadn't practiced with the 1's since preseason.

This can only mean that the coaching staff poured all of the playing time with the 1's with DJ all year.
DJ had great games through FSU. After that I think the other D's started figuring out DJ.

The ND game was a total team collapse. Ok, bad road game with weird bad weather, whatever, we should have brushed that off. Then we make some boneheaded plays on offense and special teams and the Coot game was the result.

UNC wasn't all that. The bowel (pun intended) game with UT, Cade tried, but he wasn't quite ready.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not true, he played very well finishing up at GT and was

Jun 8, 2023, 11:11 AM

given the first team before half in the next game against Furman.

You aren't given time with the 1s, there's no entitlements, you earn that time in practice and game. As soon as DJU was named starter, that decided and determined rotations.

This wasn't a situation where they were rotating 1st team snaps trying to determine a starter as in 2017 or in 2014 with Cole & Chad - DW4 broke his collarbone in Spring and wasn't part of the potential lottery.

When that changed later in the year and it was said they'd pull DJU at first sign of struggling[UNC] and roll with Cade, the practice reps changed. That's practice 101.

There are no gimmes, it's just not a thing. QBs and any position are graded on how they perform in a particular play or series, regardless of result. It doesn't have to be a completion to receive a winning grade as the proper decision itself is a boon even if the result might be lacking. Cade had some poor performances, decision making and showed a bad tendency to drift left, away from the LOS. The two performances mentioned above were great opportunities for him to earn more through game play and he unfortunately disappointed.

Water under the bridge now, hopefully the team heals, Cade & the O is reinvigorated.

I'm sure we all want the best for the program.

I stayed up late after the ACC Championship Game watching all the interviews on ACC Network. I had questions concerning just how much the coaching staff had invested in Cade’s development throughout the season. I got my answer when Eric MacLean and then EJ Manuel asked two specific questions to Cade Klubnik and Dabo Sweeney.

Big Mac wanted to know when the decision to make the QB switch happened. Cade responded that he was informed on Sunday after the South Carolina game that at the first sign of trouble it would be his game.

EJ Manuel asked the follow up to Dabo in the next interview block. He wanted to know how much of the reps Cade had received with the 1’s in practice that week. Dabo told him that DJ still had “his usual amount….the lions share, 80% or more”.

What does that say to each of you about how much was invested in CK’s development through the season ?

When I heard Dabo’s response I was kind of upset. I get it, somebody has to be named the starter and perhaps through fall practice and the early season that’s a relatively clear deferment to DJ. But DJ had an entire season as the starter in 2021 and he’s receiving the developmental investment in practice every day…….yet he isn’t improving.

At some point through the season the logical thing to do is to be Frank with DJU and tell him that if he isn’t going to improve and somehow develop with the extra advantage of getting all the reps with the ones, then those reps will be split 50/50 with Cade in hopes that someone will in fact develop.

I’m not saying to demote DJ to second string immediately. Leave him as the starter until such time as CK clearly surpasses him but if he isn’t going to develop then give someone else a legitimate chance to develop. It would have been good for both parties. It might have served to focus DJ on fixing the issues where he was failing.

I hate to go all negative nancy with you but...

1

Jun 8, 2023, 10:34 AM [ in reply to "After 4 games if you don't realize he's special... ]

the fact is that DJ had so many yard of passing than either TL or DW was that his sorry butt played 4 quarters due to Dabo's hope that he would learn to chew bubblegum while walking.

Now trust me with this, when I learned to chew bubblegum while walking I had to chew and walk at the same time. I made it, DJ either choked on his bubblegum or tripped over his own feet.
