Hold On - Maybe the sky isn't fallling.

OK, so USC and UCLA are joining the B1G...... So What? Does that alter the CFB landscape enough to cause all this gnashing of teeth and predictions that we're doomed? maybe - but maybe not.

All it does is add two teams to the B1G and increase the difficulty in scheduling within that conference and adds to cost of travel for teams and fans, perhaps ultimately reducing fan travel quite dramatically. Perhaps it adds some money to the B1G's conference pot, but after the kick for USC and UCLA is diluted by amortising over the entire conference membership, how much extra per team will they see? Maybe not so much.

The same scenario is true for the SEC if they add a coupe of teams.

Disney owns ESPN, which is the money bag for TV rights. Disney is already having financial issues due to difficulty with theme park attendance and profitability with streaming. They've also laid off a bunch of people at ESPN, so all is not roses for the CFB helicopter money.

And - if Disney can orchestrate enough chaos within CFB by virtue of only 2 major conferences, they would perhaps be in the position of negotiating a lower per team payout in total.

Clemson football has been competitive with those two conferences over the past 10 years and we should be able to continue, so long as we have support from the BOT and alumni/fans. Where we are under pressure will be continued competition for NIL compensation to recruits, but this season has shown that we can can compete (if not publicly stated) or we're able to find enough talent that doesn't consider NIL to be their top priority.

Maybe (just maybe), if we can keep our nose to the grindstone, keep on doing what works for us and so long as the CFB championship committee invites the ACC champion, we will have a chance to continue playing at a high level. I can't imagine the committee not inviting an ACC champion to the playoff.

Apple and Amazon are getting into live sports

Jul 2, 2022, 9:19 AM

With a $2.3 trillion market cap Apple makes Disney(175B) look like a mom and pop. ESPN may get priced out of the market in the near future, but even without them the cash tap isn't gonna run dry any time soon. If we don't find our way into a conference with similar resources as the other elite teams we won't be able to keep up.

^^^this is an underrated statement.

For last couple years Apple and Amazon have been kicking around getting into live sports. You have seen them already experiment with MLB and MLS. Amazon will start doing NFL games this year.

Everyone just assumes Fox and ESPN are the only 2 players at the table. I can assure you Amazon and Apple will be a part of CFB TV talks.

When Clemson is limited to $35mm vs SEC and B1G GET $100MM

Each year, you get outrun in both facilities and ABILITY TO HIRE THE BEST COACHES. The issue is the $$ differential needed to keep up in the arms race.

REVENUE is where Clemson is going to be left sucking wind by remaining in the ACC. If it was anywhere close to equal, it wouldn't be so bad. But a greater than FIFTY PERCENT deficit is ridiculous, and patently unfair. When college football was invented over a hundred years ago, nobody ever envisioned a time when entities who never touched the field would control and manipulate the future of the game.
