Clemson football Tigers. Although we did not win the ACC, our 18th season under Coach Frank Howard did produce a 3rd place finish, with a 4-3-0 conference mark, and 7-3-0 overall record.
No.15 NC State (5-0-1, 7-1-2) was the ACC Champion, and No.16 Duke (5-1-1, 6-3-2) finished in 2nd place in the league.
After an opening blowout 66-0 win over Presbyterian, Clemson would play North Carolina, and No.13 NC State back to back. North Carolina handed the Tigers a 26-0 loss on the road, and No.13 NC State beat us 13-7 in the Valley.
Four straight victories would follow, with the second of them being a 13-0 win over the Dirtpeckers on Big Thursday. Frank Howard was lobbying hard to put an end to the Big Thursday games, as they caused us scheduling issues, as well as the fact that Clemson wasn't getting a share of what were by now huge ticket and concessions sales for the game. Clemson led the series now 32-20-3.
South Carolina had held onto hosting the game every year so far because of more seating capacity. But, there were seating capacity expansions plans happening for Death Valley in 1958, and again in 1960, so Big Thursday's days were numbered. The other reason for ending Big Thursday, and moving this game to the end of the season, was that after this game was played each year, football interest in the state seemed to wane. So, making it the last game of the regular season made sense from that standpoint as well.
The third of the aforementioned four straight wins in the middle of the season for the Tigers came on the road against old friend and former coach Jess Neely and Rice, by a score of 20-7. A home 26-7 win over Maryland sent us into our next road tilt with a No.14 national ranking, against No.11 Duke. Clemson would leave with a disappointing 7-6 loss and no national ranking.
The Tigers concluded the season by winning the last two games, 13-6 at home over Wake Forest, and 45-6 on the road against Furman. All results below.
Presbyterian W 66–0 At North Carolina L 0–26 No. 13 NC State L 7–13 At Virginia W 20–6 At South Carolina (Big Thursday, Columbia, SC) W 13–0 (Clemson leads series 32-20-3.) At Rice W 20–7 Maryland W 26–7 At No. 11 Duke vs No. 14 Clemson L 6–7 Wake Forest W 13–6 At Furman W 45–6
