A Summer." This happened because Mother Nature got involved in affecting the climate on a global scale. Mount Tambora in the Indonesian islands exploded in April 1815. The climatic changes brought about by the ash clouds, which contained huge amounts of sulfur dioxide, caused unusually wet and cold conditions throughout Europe AND North America for the following year.
Crops failed, either from frost or lack of sunshine. Prices of food and grain, especially oats, which were used to feed horses, skyrocketed. Horses were the primary mode of transportation, so this was a big deal. So, one theory is that this was one of the factors which led to a German man by the name of Karl Drais to invent a way to get around without a horse: the bicycle!
The gloomy weather also influenced writers of the time. On a vacation in Geneva, a group of writer friends got together, and it was suggested that each of them write a "ghost" story. Out of this, Mary Shelley, who at the age of 16 had eloped with her soon to be husband Percy Blythe Shelley, wrote the novel Frankenstein. Lord Byron penned his poem Darkness.
So, 1816 was quite a year. Can't say I'm sorry I wasn't around then!

hunted and fished in order to eat. Somedays, I couldn't tell if it was day or night. Miserable to say the least. We were able to get through it and survive. Finally, Mother Nature let go of her grasp and life went back to normal.
