101 years ago, Clemson greeted another new football coach.

To say that 1921 was not kind to Clemson football would be like remarking that the Sun is a little warm. First year Head Coach E.J. Stewart was greeted rudely by the opposition, with his charges only managing a lone Home victory against Presbyterian, and two Road ties, against Furman and The Citadel.
The season consisted of only nine games, down two from the previous year. This may have been a blessing in disguise, since we had a record of 1-6-2. Among other disasters, a 56-0 Landblasting by Auburn on the Plains still stands today as their highest margin of victory in the series. And, it WAS a series back then. Auburn was designated as an annual rivalry game for us in the old SIAA conference, and semi-regular meetings with them carried over to the Southern Conference. And, much like with Georgia Tech, we had very little early success against them.
In yet another distressing development, the annual victory over the Coots on Big Thursday was once again deferred, with the Tigers falling to the Coots for the second year in a row, this time by three touchdowns, 21-0. Clemson still led the all time series 13-5-1.
Throughout the next year, visitors to Columbia thought they were being flashed a “peace” sign, but Clemson fans knew it was a disgusting “Two Bomb” symbol. All season results below:
At Centre L 0–14 Presbyterian W 34–0 At Auburn L 0–56 At Furman T 0–0 At South Carolina L 0–21 (Big Thursday. Clemson leads series 13-5-1) At Georgia Tech L 7–48 (Grant Field destroys us yet again) The Citadel T 7–7 (County Fairgrounds, Orangeburg, SC) Erskine L 0–13 At Georgia L 0–28 (Sanford Field, between the small twigs)

Spoiler for tomorrow: Better times were ahead for the Tigers.
