South Carolina Highway 23 is a 47.1-mile-long state highway that runs from the west end at US 221/SC 28 in Modoc to the east end at US 1 in Batesburg-Leesville, going through Edgefield, Johnston, Ward, Ridge Spring, and Monetta. Ed McDaniel is from Batesburg-Leesville.
 
SC 23 has Hamilton Branch State Park on one end and Batesburg-Leesville on the other. Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, is a town of 5,300 in Lexington and Saluda counties. It is a consolidation of the towns of Batesburg and Leesville in 1992 and is known as the "Gateway to the Midlands", halfway between Columbia and Augusta. Batesburg was involved in the beginning of the civil rights movement in 1946 when Isaac Woodard, a black World War II veteran on his way home, was taken from a bus and beaten by police officers including the chief, leaving Woodard blind. After inaction and a miscarriage of justice by the state, President Truman got involved and civil rights initiatives began on the federal level. About 10 miles from Lake Murray, Batesburg-Leesville is home to the South Carolina Poultry Festival.

Clemson FB Tracy Illya Johnson (1985-1988) defined what the Fullback position should be during the great Danny Ford era at Clemson. Great runner! Great blocker! Could even catch a pass on occasion!
While at Clemson:

“Johnson was the starting fullback for Head Coach Danny Ford’s ACC title teams in 1987 and 1988, finishing both years with a 10-2 record and a top 10 national ranking in either the UPI or AP polls. He was also a key reserve on Clemson’s 1986 ACC Championship team that finished in the top 20.
Johnson is regarded as one of the top combination runners and blockers from the running back position in school history. During his Clemson career, he gained 1,579 yards and scored 23 touchdowns. He was also credited with 180 career knockdown blocks, most on record by a Clemson running back. One of the top short-yardage runners in school history, he converted a first down on third or fourth downs with fewer than two yards to go 50 times in 57 career opportunities.”

The Houston Oilers selected Tracy Johnson with the 271st Pick (10th Round) of the 1989 NFL Draft.
