Here's today's pirate history

Sep 28, 2021, 3:30 PM

On this date in 1718 Stede Bonnet (known as the "Gentleman Pirate") is captured by Colonel William Rhett while careening his ship Royal James at Cape Fear. Best known for having the worst and shortest case of a mid life crisis ever, Bonnet was a wealthy and educated land owner/farmer from Barbados. He was wealthy enough to have his own ship built (rather than simply steal one) and became a pirate in the summer of 1717 due to his wife's nagging and "discomforts he found in a married State".

Stede Bonnet had recently regained his captaincy after a pardon from North Carolina Governor Charles Eden, and received a privateering commission against Spanish shipping. By July of 1718, he and his crew had returned to piracy.

Bonnet entered an estuary of the Cape Fear River around mid-August to careen the Royal James, planning on a return to the Caribbean after hurricane season had passed.

It was here that Colonel William Rhett, authorized by South Carolina’s Governor Robert Johnson, came upon Bonnet and his crew in his two sloops, Henry and Sea Nymph.

Bonnet and his men were outnumbered two to one, but undeterred, they attempted to fight and escape. Unfortunately, all three ships ran aground in the shallow water, and had to trade cannon and musket shot from a distance. The battle raged on for five hours, until eventually, Colonel Rhett’s Henry was freed by the rising tide.

With Bonnet and his Royal James still immobilized, the Henry was able to sail within close range and, facing the prospect of full broadsides from the sloop, Bonnet and his crew surrendered.

After a trial and conviction, in December of 1718, Bonnet and 29 of his crew were hanged near White Point Gardens in downtown CHS, and buried in the marsh near the low tide mark.

and he had a cameo in one episode. He was just as weird in that as he is in real life.

I mean, given the right amount of money, I could empathize here and go into pirating myself.

Unfortunately, all three ships ran aground in the shallow water, and had to trade cannon and musket shot from a distance.

Sounds on-brand with a lot of the drunk idjits who boat around here.
