Topic was the direction college football is heading. Talking about players becoming professional, House settlement, academics becoming less and less important, etc.
We talked about how for the past several years schools are becoming less and less concerned about academics, letting players transfer in with no concern for normal transfer protocols, hiring one year mercenaries, etc. we talked about how the solution was to become an NFL model, players would become employees, salaries would be determined by collective bargaining, etc.
I made this comment, "When Clemson win the national championship in 2025 will that be the last national championship won by a team where the players actually take classes and get real degrees?"

There was a correlation this past year. The team that spent the most money on their roster won the National Championship. How is that not a correlation?

Here are the top 10 funded programs since 2005 -
Feb 10, 2025, 9:45 PM
|
|
1. OREGON DUCKS ($969 MILLION) 2. TEXAS A&M AGGIES ($849 MILLION) 3. TEXAS LONGHORNS ($766 MILLION) 4. FLORIDA GATORS ($763 MILLION) 5. GEORGIA BULLDOGS ($716 MILLION) 6. OKLAHOMA ST COWBOYS ($670 MILLION) 7. LSU TIGERS ($618 MILLION) 8. OKLAHOMA SOONERS ($597 MILLION) 9. AUBURN TIGERS ($580 MILLION) 10. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES ($540 MILLION)
Only TWO of these most-funded teams made the playoffs.
Here are the rest of the top 50. It clearly shows that having the most money doesn’t equate to wins.
50. Memphis Tigers: $170 million
49. Maryland Terrapins: $194 million
48. Minnesota Golden Gophers: $199 million
47. Oregon State Beavers: $201 million
46. Colorado Buffaloes: $208 million
45. NC State Wolfpack: $216 million
44. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: $220 million
43. UCLA Bruins: $233 million
42. Nebraska Cornhuskers: $236 million
41. Iowa State Cyclones: $249 million
40. Arizona State Sun Devils: $265 million
39. Mississippi State Bulldogs: $273 million
38. California Golden Bears: $283 million
37. Purdue Boilermakers: $289 million
36. Kentucky Wildcats: $302 million
35. Ole Miss Rebels: $310 million
34. Virginia Tech Hokies: $319 million
33t. Kansas State Wildcats: $324 million
33t. Arkansas Razorbacks: $324 million
31. Mizzou Tigers: $344 million
30. North Carolina Tar Heels: $344 million
29. Arizona Wildcats: $346 million
28. Indiana Hoosiers: $351 million
27. West Virginia Mountaineers: $354 million
26. Illinois Fighting Illini: $373 million
25. Penn State Nittany Lions: $386 million
24. Wisconsin Badgers: $389 million
23. Texas Tech Red Raiders: $396 million
22. Washington Huskies: $402 million
21. Michigan State Spartans: $439 million
20. Louisville Cardinals: $450 million
19. Kansas Jayhawks: $459 million
18. South Carolina Gamecocks: $466 million
17. Clemson Tigers: $476 million
16. Iowa Hawkeyes: $477 million
15. Michigan Wolverines: $493 million
14. Tennessee Volunteers: $500 million
13. Virginia Cavaliers: $516 million
12. Alabama Crimson Tide: $528 million
11. Ohio State Buckeyes: $536 million
As you can see, lots of teams with tons of cash don’t even make the playoffs. A correlation is defined as the process of establishing a relationship or connection between two or more measures. Based on the data above, there’s no correlation between funding and winning.

The data shows that’s just not true. It doesn’t rule. It may help, but when only two of the top 10 funded programs make the playoffs it shows it doesn’t “rule”.
When the writer said only 2 made the play-off, was he only talking about this year? Texas, Oregon and UGA made it this year, from his top 10 spenders.
If he was talking about multiple years of CFP (play-offs), he would have to add Okla, and perhaps others.
The consensus seems to be that THE Ohio State University was easily the BIG SPENDER for the most-recent season! And money talked.

Point stands, 3 of the top 10 funded programs (since 2005) have EVER made the playoffs. Yeah, Ohio State spent $20M in NIL, but this single data point doesn’t conclude NIL is the reason they won. It’s definitely not enough data to say “$$$$$ rules”. It’s one data point compared to almost 20 years of funding. Did I mention only 3 of the top 10 funded programs have ever made the playoffs? 🙂

I hope you are semi-right. I would like the last 5 National Championships at Clemson from 2025-2029 be by academically sound teams. We can dream can't we Bret?

I don’t like to give Ohio State credit for anything but their past year’s football graduation rate was 94%. It sounds good to claim we might be the only program left that can do both but I don’t really believe that.

I believe a lot of players will be concerned with their education.

A very small percent of college players will play on Sundays. That great percentage which doesn't make the cut realize that the opportunity for future opportunities are found in education.
I won't depart from the term 'student athlete,' over the few who are sure they are NFL bound.

Around me, there are UT, TAMU, OU, LSU & BAMA fans. They ALL say the same thing. They’re less interested……and so am I.
Who can buy the best team, IS NOT interesting. The richest can buy the best team. Don’t need to watch to know that.

Yep that is it in a nutshell for myself.
About like what the Dodgers are doing in MLB.
