Golf question?

Apr 23, 2012, 1:18 PM

What is the norm for golfers making the jump to the PGA? Are they allowed to move on at any time or are they required to play a certain number of years once signing?

Specifically do we expect Mills to return next year? With Mills and Reeves leading the team and the addition of Proveaux we could have a great year.

They can turn pro at any time. This is speculation on my part, but I believe Mills will return for his senior year.

simple - you've got to earn a PGA tour card.

This can be accomplished a number of ways. Not sure that Corbin has announced what he's going to do...I'd imagine he'll come back unless he's already graduated.

To play on the PGA tour you are correct.....

but there are several mini-tours (minor leagues) that you can play on as a pro. Once you enter a pro tournament and declare yourself a pro, you're a pro.

There isn't really a norm

It's an extremely personal decision most likely made between the golfer, his parents, his swing coach from home (if he has one), and his college coach. It all just depends on what they think the golfer can gain from being in the program balanced against what they think he could gain with the ability to devote 100% of his time to practicing (which is a huge advantage, as opposed to having to go to class, etc.). That being said, I believe Corning will be back next season. He's a hometown boy who I think feels like he gains a lot from having Penley and Buts as coaches.

Your guess is as good as mine though.

Thanks everyone. If Mills returns we could really make a run next year. Idk what advantage GT has at the ACC championship course but we need to find a way to take them down.

You're a pro by simply saying so. To get a pga tour card you pay a certain fee (costly) to go to the Q school in November which is held in a number of sites around the country. The top qualifiers from those sites go Florida for a six round tournament. The top 25 get cards to the pga tour and the nezxt 25 get cards to the Nationwide tour. The top 25 money winners on the Nationwide tour each year move up to the PGA tour.
