Getting to know Wesley Goodwin

I told you this morning that for now it appears Wesley Goodwin (or just Wes) will be moving into a staff role, at least for now. And that has prompted a lot of questions, like, “Who is Wes Goodwin? What do we know about him?”
I am here to help answer some of those questions.
Let’s start with the basics, from the media guide:
Wesley Goodwin is in his fourth season as Clemson’s senior defensive assistant and his 10th with the program overall. He was a graduate assistant at Clemson from 2009-11, then served as a defensive analyst from 2012-14. From 2015-17, he was with the Arizona Cardinals under Bruce Arians. Goodwin helped the Cardinals to a 28-19-1 record as Assistant to the Head Coach during that time, including a 13-3 record in 2015, when the Cardinals reached the NFC Championship Game. He is a graduate of Mississippi State and began his career as a graduate assistant with the Bulldogs. He earned his undergraduate degree in 2007 and master’s degree from Mississippi State in 2009.
I’ve written this before, but I will tell you again. Back in December of 2012, Auburn hired Clemson cornerbacks coach Charlie Harbison. Swinney trusted Wes so much back then that he made Wes the interim corners coach, along with Brian Mance. Both Mance and Goodwin prepared the corners for the bowl game against LSU.
Swinney and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians shared an agent (he passed away a few years ago) and Arians made more than trip to the football offices. He was so impressed with Goodwin he hired him away. Goodwin’s title quickly became the assistant to the head coach. When Arians left the desert, Goodwin returned to Clemon where he has be an analyst. He scouts opposing offenses and breaks down plays and people tell me he is part of the genius of Brent Venables’ defense. I’ve been told when people think Clemson is stealing signals it’s actually Wes calling the play based on the hours of film study he’s done.
I think Swinney thinks so highly of Wes that this is a way to keep Venables from poaching Goodwin. I was also told that when the news was announced to the team yesterday, the players erupted in cheers, happy for the first time in week. They all love Wes and the work he puts in. He has also worked as one of the recruiting hosts and is familiar with that side of the job as well. Maybe this is a trial run. Maybe not. Only Swinney knows for sure. But it will be exciting to see what Wes can do.

There’s this button on the keyboard that works magic. It can turn little letters into big letters with one pluck, and back again with another. Most modern keyboards, have a small light embedded under the key giving notice that it’s activated or not.
And get this… It’s over twice as wide as most of the other keys calling out and all but yearning one to use it at the appropriate time.
I love technology! What will these kids think of next?

He’s going on and on about a button on the keyboard that’s twice as wide as the others, but has he seen the space bar?

Thanks David for the info. Curious if he stays up in the box or signals in plays on the side lines?

The corner was in pretty good coverage, just happened 3 once in a lifetime throws from a once in a lifetime QB (season) happened along with not getting pressure on the QB. Maybe some safety help would have made a difference but that wasn't his call. IMHO

Thanks David. I had no idea. What would we tiger junkies do without you? Thanks also for the hard work you did in following B V departure while at the same time having family issues going on. Thanks also to your good wife for all her support and work. Dabo will get the situation fixed as he always does. Whether it is Wes or someone else my faith is in Dabo. There is none like him in the sport.

Maybe Conn is just there to show him the ropes of calling a defense before we turn Goodwin loose as permanent DC.

Sunday that revealed top athletic brass from Oklahoma getting out of rental car to go in and hand Brent the keys to the OKie football program with probably an envelope containing a $7,000,000 signing bonus check!
Saying, the Russian spy network has nothing on this TNet guy. LOL

From what I have been reading...
Dec 8, 2021, 8:21 AM
|
|
...Wes has been one of the best kept secrets on the Clemson sideline.
It must have been tough for him to stay in the shadows when BV was getting so much recognition and it's clear now that he has been a BIG contributor to BV's schemes. I know the feeling and I really appreciate those kind of guys.
Dabo has been really good at identifying talent that others miss.
Trust Dabo.

I am feeling good about Wes. However, if Tony leaves, I do not feel good about Brandon Streeter getting the OC position being reported by ESPN. We saw how Brandon Streeter called a game against OSU last year and that did not turn out very well. I was there for that game and the offense looked out of sync all night. We need someone with a good offensive mind like Joe Brady. I feel like Brandon would run the same schemes as Tony and nothing would change.

Coach Streeter is a Clemson guy. And he played quarterback at Clemson. And he is smart. And we have a big Playbook with all kinds of cool stuff in it. Example we switched from pure 4 wide spread vs UGA to the two back look vs Wake to give us an advantage. Same Playbook. You can only run out of the Playbook what your players and injuries will allow. Our schemes are fine. We have every set & play that ANYBODY ELSE has. If the players like Streeter and will play hard for him that's all that matters. Go Tigers!
