Have you tried that? At some point most home owners give it a shot. Most end up with stinky crap.
Tnet guys are more intelligent and tend to read up on things, so I don't mean yall.

A garden pond is not just a decoration, more like a hobby. It is like the aquarium you already gave up on.

If your garden pond is 10 gallons or Lake Hartwell, the same rules of science apply.
I am not talking as to a dead water feature, but a fun place with interest as it supports critters.
A dead pool is easy, but adding and supporting a critter changes everything. Even if you do not add them, they will find you if your pond is healthy. Today my yard is buzzing with Damselflies and Dragonflies flies.
A small garden pond will attack any mosquitoes you might have much better than those high dollar trap things. It can quickly pay for itself if you like to be in your yard.

I have a few, from 20gal (my tadpole farm) up to 4000.

Chemicals can't do the job. Filters can't do the job. Untill one establishes a "nitrogen cycle" they will fail.
That is easy to do.
Chemicals and filters can still play a huge role as to convenience, but in many all needed is circulation.
Being lazy, I am big on filters.

The main deal in a pond (aquarium) is bacteria. Plants are a plus, but don't count on those to keep you clean.
It really aint that difficult once you grab on to the basics.

Good water quality parameters must be obtained. There are many parameters, but if you keep an eye on ph after bacteria is established you will be OK. I don't believe anyone can succeed in a contained area without some chemicals to help with ph.

Most everything you read on the web is repeated crap from idiots, or someone trying to sell you something. Don't quote that cr ap to me. Don't believe that cr ap.
I have enjoyed fish in aquariums for over 50 years, still have a big one with very old fish.
I have been into garden ponds for over 20. The same principles apply, but outdoors is much easier.

Nothing in your yard will equal a fun garden pond as to fun and interest. Tmail me, my help is free to Tiger fans.

Once honey bees took over an Owl house. It got so heavy with honey it crashed as I did not mount it to support that.
I have a few mason bee houses that are always in demand.
The world will die if bees do.

Grew up with one and have always wanted one (daddy always had a goldfish pond). So a couple months ago I finally put one in and love it. Very simple. Took the plastic liner route and did a little water fall, have about 20 fish in there. Wish I’d done 20 years ago but it was just always next on the list. I know it wills require a good bit of cleaning but that’s ok. The water splashing is very cool.

Mine garden ponds are on Lake Hartwell. Heron Yard decorations and the fact I can't compete with Hartwell have made that not a problem. Herons are solitary critters won't land where another is - get a decent decoy.

My suggestion would be to first go with a preformed pond. I have a couple -- one is 220 gallons and over 20 years old. It is a joy.

My favorite is my "Branch" as birds go crazy over it, but that is another post.

My biggest pond is 4000 gallons. I made it 40" deep so coons and herons could not wade there.
I lined the walls with 1/2" boards and poured many, many bags of Sakrete behind them.
If doing that again would hire a back hoe as UpState clay is hard as rock. At the time my old Bride was up to the task so saved some coin there.

Make a plan

Keep in mind that not only did I learn how to draw up plans in Clemson engineering, but also took a class under Mr Clark in high school. Later I got paid to draw up blueprints for roads for the NC Hwy Department, but Uncle Sam needed me more.

I drew this detailed plan up:

-- and it turned out like this as I do rank (very low) on Aspergers.

It looks nothing like that many years later, but best is to have a plan.
The point being it aint that hard.

Monsanto's corporate office in St Louis. You left out Round-up on your graphic, which I am pretty sure is a felony in the lower 48, at the very least you are on their radar bud. Sorry, but I get paid $500 to rat out hippies that think sustainability is the key to running a profitable agro-business.

Sounds too much like work. We went with the wildflower garden, plenty of bees, butterflies, and birds. Plus a bonus of less grass to mow.
