For Those That Are Unaware...The "Star System" is a VERY

Jan 23, 2022, 3:44 PM

Subjective process and is not an unbiased source of truth or anything close to a meritocracy. Lots of financial motives, much like and including our pals at ESPIN, do to all things college football. Believe it or not the ability to find the hidden 2-3 stars that are NFL caliber players and/or develop players from whatever stage they are at is the biggest value a coaching staff can deliver on.

According to SB Nation data from 2013 and 2018

The NCAA said in 2013 there were 310,000-some seniors playing football. Here’s how long their odds are to reach various recruiting ratings, using class of 2018 data from Rivals, if we settle on 300,000 football-playing seniors as a fair estimate.

30 five-stars, or 0.01 percent of the class
380 four-stars, or 0.13 percent of the class
1,328 three-stars, or 0.44 percent of the class
1,859 two-stars, or 0.62 percent of the class
296,403 unrated, or 98.88 percent of the class

For argument's sake let's presume each of the 130 FBS teams have 20 scholarships open every or 2,600 scholarships are awarded each year. Anyone who does any kind of statistical analysis would tell you trying to do any precise analysis within the the top 1.5% of the data (3-5 star) of a sample size would be a long run for a short slide.

What does it all mean, talent evaluation and development of a coaching staff and now in the NIL era the ability to build a culture to retain succession planning and a bench are absolutely critical. I believe Dabo and his track record will thrive in this new world. Give it time and let some dust settle.

Talent is always good to have BUT a player with great desire and work ethics is just as valuable. Talent will get you only so far, imo

Absolutely. Two of our sons were swimmers. One was recruited by Clemson with scholarship support but turned it down after the coach tried to get him to change his major since “....Architecture demands too much time”. The other had several friends who were faster in youth swimming clubs.but, they were not as dedicated as he was and over time he excelled and passed them and swam in college for a coach who allowed him to malformed in Physics..
