Finally, an article about the TCU/Baylor ...

Nov 30, 2022, 8:17 PM

... ending.

Why didn't the officials allow time for Baylor to substitute?

Kinda shocking this hasn't come up before...

Nov 30, 2022, 8:31 PM

...there have been many last second field goal attempts at end of games with current rules. Interesting.

Not to hijack your post but I have a question for you -

Do you see similarities between our current situation with Dabo/coaches/team and the final years of the Bobby Bowden era at FSU? I don’t know much about that situation, but from the outside it appeared Bowden was hiring friends/family and slowly killing the program based on his personal (albeit good) goals as opposed to a winning football program while the administration had their hands tied because he was the legend that built the program.

Just curious and figured you would know best.

TIA and sorry if you’ve answered this before.

Someone posted the "Rule Book"

Nov 30, 2022, 8:56 PM

and the last play field goal that is obvious is an exception to the rule. I am presuming that whomever posted it where ever I saw it did a copy/paste of the rule book and I haven't looked it up myself.

I think the other rule that may see a change is

a fair catch on an onside kick once it has hit the ground. Either that or the onside kick will become a dinosaur. A fair criticism Dabo or any head coach is if he doesn't require the players to read the rule book and test their knowledge, should apply for all the coaches and support staff as well.

I thought the same thing too but the guy in the article leaves out a specific callout in the rules for if a team at the end of a half has no timeouts, is in FG range, and there’s only 10 seconds left. It says the defense should reasonably expect the team to kick a FG and the ref will not stand over the ball in this case, so the ref in the Baylor/TCU game surprisingly did exactly as the rule states.

It’s not explicitly stated but if the defense then moved out of FG formation into a regular play the ref should move up and cover the ball since the rule only gives this substitution leeway on a FG formation at the end of a half, but the rule book should probably call this example out for clarity.

The rule is in Section 5 - Substitutions, approved ruling 3-5-2-VIII
