Euology for a dog:

Oct 16, 2013, 9:01 AM

We put our 12 year old Shepherd/Chow mix down in the house Sunday afternoon. The Eulogy written by the Laps of Love vet:

Beautiful 12 year old Phaedrus was a prim and proper Southern gal. Adopted as a pup from the local SPCA, her unique name came from the iconic novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It seemed a bit masculine for her, though, and it ended up being shortened to 'Phae' more often than not--which was perfect for a Carolina lass such as she. Miss Phae's pedigree was in dispute--she was from the shelter, after all. She was a big, fluffy girl, and almost resembled an Australian Shepherd...or two. Southern ladies don't discuss their weight as it's not 'good manners,' but we'll just say that she was 'extra fluffy,' 'big boned,' and north of triple digits...and, we'll leave it at that. Her favorite food? Steak. Now, THAT'S class!

Despite her impressive size, Phae had Aussie traits--particularly in that she LOVED to herd her human sisters and their friends. As they walked from the house to the playground, she ensured that they stayed on the proper path. When it came to herself, however, she enjoyed jumping the 5 foot privacy fence just to go on walkabout. If it pleased her, she'd even jump it to get back in. On one occasion when she did not feel like coming home right away, the family went out into the neighborhood to find her. When they did, she was still unconvinced that it was in her best interest to return home. They tried complimenting her, calling her 'princess' and the like, but she refused to come trotting home until they called her 'Pretty.' Don't we all just want to hear that every now and then?!

She also took it upon herself to mother the babies around her...as long as they were not of her species. Birds, kittens and children...Miss Phae loved them all! Alas, not puppies, though...for some reason they just aggravated the tar out of her. She cared little for loud noises like fireworks, thunder and the like. Once, when the family was on vacation during the Fourth of July holiday, Phae jumped the fence in the backyard to try to get to her people and save them from the doom that was surely about to befall them all.

As she got older, she spent more time in her spot behind the recliner, or grumpily blocking access to rooms as she deemed fit. She had come out to greet me 6 months ago when I came to help her canine brother Fritz get to the Rainbow Bridge, but had retreated to her usual spot. However, when I came to help her, she came right up to me and licked my face as I squatted down--never forgot her manners, did she?! She limped away to the spot of her choice, and we obediently followed. She was offered a delicious morsel of brisket, and with the social skills befitting a true Southern belle, she delicately licked the plate. Miss Phae was surrounded by her loving family as she left us in search of kittens and baby birds that need tending, as well as unattended steak that um...needs tending, too...

Miss Phae, thank you for reminding us all of proper Southern decorum. I know that your family is going to miss you dearly!

This is the second dog we've had put down this year and I can't recommend Laps of Love CSRA enough. The perform the euthanasia in the house where everyone, people and animal, can be comfortable and they do it with utmost compassion. If you find yourself in this situation, look for a vet in your area: http://www.lapoflove.com/
