Electronic tickets.

I'm definitely too old. Digital tickets and I don't get along well. I'm not technophobic. For a septuagenarian I would be considered well above average in the "computer age knowledge arena."

But, I'm a novice in digital tickets. Just don't do it very much. (A couple of you guys on here know what I'm talking about when I mention the ACC championship game last year.)

Well, on to my story. Last week a friend and I were laughing about how it has come to the point that you need an app on your phone to do anything anymore. You have to have the app, scan a QR code, etc. to go to the bathroom it seems.

It's all about ease and places not having to deal with cash.

Well, this buddy just called me and was laughing. He told me he was taking his grandkids to a high school baseball game tonight. (Local private school. Church affiliated. Small school. Definitely not one of these athletic factories like IMG.)

He got up to the window and reached for his wallet. The lady said they didn't take cash. So, he reached for his credit card. She said they didn't take credit either. He had to download an app, then scan a QR code, etc.... He started laughing. She said she would be glad to help him. But, he saw several people in line behind him so he just told her he'd do it later. Left his grandkids (HS age) at the game (they get in free) and went home.

You can't go watch a HS baseball game without a smart phone these days.

The government wants a cashless society. They will have total control over everything. EXAMPLE: They can track everything you do. They decide to track your carbon footprint, how many vacations you take etc.
They decide they will tax you every time you mow your lawn, take a vacation or go out to eat. All in the name of climate control.

This is driven by companies not the government. It costs more to accept cash

than electronic payments. I know you’re gonna yell about interchange fees, but it’s labor and cash handling expenses that far outweigh interchange . This isn’t a guess; I’ve done business cases for my company for this exact change.

Now I’m not sure what is going on at that little high school but I’m guessing they don’t want the hassle of cash handling at athletic events

Esso Club gives a "discount" if you pay in cash.

Well, it doesn't charge the credit card fee if you pay in cash.

lol you sound like my dad, he was saying the same thing a while back. I agree with your point though, it is annoying when all these different places you go expect you to download their app and set up an account just to be able to conduct basic business.

How about my wife goes to the concession stand at the App State game to buy some H2O....no cash accepted.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Funny you mention that! My friend went to the concession prior to the game

to get a soda, stands in line for at least 10 minutes, whips out a 10 dollar bill to pay and is told "credit card only"! He was pissed! No big sign over the concession stand that you could see before getting in line! Just a little sign below the card reader!

You would think there would be a large sign, visible before you even got in line! He sent an email to Graham Neff Monday to complain. I don't know if he has gotten a response yet!

We were just laughing about it.

Personally, I just don't do nearly as much on line business of any kind as most people do. And, I haven't had the need to start doing routine transactions by smart phones.

It's just the transition process. A lot similar, I imagine, to when credit cards became the "normal" way to do business rather than checks.

Heck, I'm old enough to remember buying traveler's checks when going on vacation.

As we were laughing about it I told him if I had been there I would have told her, "QR codes are the mark of the beast. I'm not taking the mark of the beast."

Yes, but when legal tender is not accepted, then where are we? Someone else is in control besides you, that is where we are.

I went to a conference in New Orleans last year. The Convention Center where it was located was a cashless venue. But, they did accept credit cards. You didn't need an app.

transactions. I haven't had any problem with the digital Clemson tickets, and I've been to several big time concerts the last two or three years (Joe Bonamassa, Marcus King, Tedeski Trucks, Avett Brothers) and haven't had any problem with the digital tickets...most were from Ticketmaster.

And I'm an old fart...74 years old!

That's one of the big reasons why I dropped Iptay and stopped buying season tickets when they went digital to buy season tickets. I'm a retired programmer and I know how easy it is to do stuff(whether it will happen or not is up to debate). I'll put on my tinfoil cap and stay home for the most part. Call me paranoid to a degree.

This afternoon I called Callaway Gardens in GA. (On my phone, which is not synched with my computer. Different company completely.)

Two hours or so later I click on Facebook. Guess what the first message on my facebook page was. Yep. An add from Callaway Gardens.

Haven't been to a game since digital tickets began use. Don't use my phone for financial transactions so not sure how I would be able access downloaded tickets at a gate. Assume local wifi access would first be needed if tickets are located on the phone's internal storage but don't know if that's the case if they've been transfered to an SD card.

Also intensely dislike needing to set up an account with a vendor when I may use that source only once.
