Comment on GT structure - there is no perfect D scheme

Sep 19, 2021, 9:53 AM

They were in cloud coverage, which they hadn’t shown. Caught us off guard. However, two vulnerabilities -
1) inside run
2) flood concepts

Clearly 1) was done with heavy doses of Shipley and the the QB run game. Why not run some basic flood concepts? Should essentially have a man free and our scheme is easily amenable.

Not a coach and I know there is probably more nuance. But it does seem odd that it seems like the chess game is a single move on Offense. They came out with an opening move and we didn’t move our chess pieces to force them into the next move.

Oh well - I hope these are just growing pains (for a collective of people including players/coaches) with teams throwing the kitchen sink on D. Seems like this happened back in 2016 early in the year with Watson.

Let me propose an honest question: Do you think the GT "Structure" would have stopped Bama or Okla. from going deep? NOT!! That entire interview by Elliott was a load of hogwash and excuses.

There is usually a CB that has a deep portion of the field. You can put your fastest guy in the slot and make a bet that he’ll beat that DB to the back corner. That’s essentially a personnel matchup. Apparently Ladson has some serious wheels, so that could’ve been tried too.

Just to say, OU and/or Bama and the like might have just trusted the personnel matchup and pushed it down the field with the right personnel on the field.
