For those of you who had Colonel Ben Skardon as a professor at Clemson or those familiar with his story or even those who want to learn about a great American hero, here is an outstanding article about Colonel Skardon in the summer edition of Clemson World. His amazing story is awe-inspiring and personally, he is one of the only true heroes I have had the honor of knowing. Aside from his incredible military career, I believe he is one of the few people who could take sophomore English Literature and make it fascinating.

Back then, I wish that I had known that I was in the presence of a hero who sacrificed so much for our country.

Strut the seersucker suit, but not once...ONCE, did he ever hint at his past! Wonderful man...enjoyed that booming voice and gentle teaching style.

You will never hear of a "Real Hero" just start talking about the heroic thing/things they done for man kind. If they just start bragging about, it must have been heroic in their own mind, period!!!!

He was interested in people that could speak or knew about Geechee language. He asked us that the first day of class. I had him for American Lit. He was dressed in the seersucker suit and bow tie often. I never knew he was a survivor of Bataan. He never mentioned it in class. He is/was an excellent professor.

Yes I was fortunate enough and yes, and I feel my life was enriched by him and what he had to share about his journey. A great man, no doubt about it.

and chat for a while over an adult beverage back when he was only 101

at the time, i didn't know his story, but he still made an incredible impression

really enjoyed talking with him

my father was a college professor at a small school in NC for many years and one of his colleagues was also a Bataan survivor... and he never, ever talked about it and would leave a room/conversation any time someone brought up the war. i remember my dad telling me to never bring it up

What a great story about a great warrior, and Clemson man. Walterboro, SC has had some brave men raised there in Colleton County. I know this bc, that is where my entire family on both sides were born and raised, and I've never known a coward among none of them. My Dad was also born in 1917, and he, along with his brothers have fought in one, or both those wars, and the same goes for my moms brothers. Only a few of them came home without missing a body part, or two.

IMO, the men that were born and raised in our country before the 1980s, those were the bravest men this country has ever known, IMPO!!!

I've thought we should name it "Skardon Hall" - can't imagine a finer example of what it means to being a "Clemson Gentleman" than Colonel Skardon.

What a great idea! I wonder if it was considered? I guess it’s too late now but that would have been perfect!
