CLEMSON/TEXAS PRIMER for those going to the game.....

Just wanted to post some helpful hints about going to a game at DKR Stadium. Some of these may have already been posted...just wanted to give these out since I've been to two football games at Texas over the last two years: one on a college visit for one of my children in 2023; and one this season when the Gators played there last month.

1) ACCOMMODATIONS: I would recommend staying downtown in the Sixth Street area. This is Austin's main area for bars and there are tons of hotels. IMO, it’s a poor-man’s Broadway (Nashville). Good bars but can be sketchy in areas. The south side of campus is about 0.7-1 mile north. Tons of Marriott/Hilton Hotels, but lots of boutique hotels as well. The AT&T hotel (not downtown) is on campus near their bell tower and is a university associated hotel much like the Martin Inn at Clemson. Its ± 0.4 miles southwest of the stadium---we stayed there in 2023. Nice University of Texas themed hotel with SW flair--original...not Ritz/Four Seasons...but quite nice and very convenient. https://meetattexas.com/

2) TRANSPORTATION: Highly suggest Ubering everywhere. As mentioned above, the downtown hotels and ones like the AT&T are w/i one mile of campus. Parking is a chore downtown (high $ pay to park at hotel & hard to find spaces when going out). I would avoid the cost of rental and the inconvenience of finding a place to park and just use Uber.

3) TAILGATING: ANOTHER reason to Uber is due to the extreme lack of surface parking around DKR stadium. Most parking is via garages due to lack of available land. Therefore, most people just walk to the stadium or Uber. If staying downtown near Sixth Street, I would Uber. Just tell driver to get you as close to Martin Luther King Blvd/STADIUM as possible.
Very few people tailgate from their vehicles. It’s a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT tailgating experience than Clemson/most SEC schools. The atmosphere around the stadium is like a carnival/fair with rides, games, beer/mixed drink vendors, even a concert (Rick Springfield played after UF game just outside stadium). Again, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT but kinda cool IMO b/c it is a different vibe. There are few grass areas outside of stadium that have been leased to companies where you can prepay to get in and have your food/drink included along with music provided. If you really want to tailgate from your vehicle, I suggest parking in the Blue Surface Lots (37,38,39) just NE behind visitors (east) side of stadium. These are literally one of the few and by far the best places to park. Open area asphalt surface parking—first come first serve. See map: https://texaslonghorns.com/documents/2024/8/16/2024-25_FB_Parking_Map.pdf

4) STADIUM: I found their fans to be quite cool. They love their FB and they hate OU. Texas Fight and Eyes of Texas was very cool. The selection of food/beverage is far superior to what you will find at Clemson IMO. A lot of SW themed food and drink (margaritas, etc….). Lots of food options. When you see their South End Zone complex, you can see the $$$ that oozes from that place. Bevo will be in the SW corner and a large cannon in the SE corner. Be prepared, that cannon is SUPER LOUD –10 times louder than our cannon coming down the Hill. Be prepared. Most Gator fans when I was there were in Sections 30, 31 and 32 with some in upper decks. I highly suggest getting lowers if possible.

FOOD: Lots of great places to eat In Austin. My wife did all that, but plenty of legendary BBQ, fine dining, sports bars, etc…. Someone from Austin will know a lot more than me.

Feel free to ask questions. Again, someone from Texas/Austin will know more, just trying to give details that mainly pertain to a business/in/out type trip where its mainly about the game

...when catching an Uber from Austin airport, you have to walk a good bit to parking garage and use color coded numbers on concrete support beams for your pickup spot.

As others have suggested, flying out of San Antonio is a great option to save on flights and hotel on Saturday night if needed.
