Clemson tied for 5th after 36 holes at Chitengwa Memorial

Clemson, SC—Andrew Swanson had an opening round 67, Colin Salema an opening 69, and Lucas Augustsson had consecutive even-par rounds to lead Clemson to a fifth-place standing out of 12 teams after 36 holes of the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Golf Tournament at the University of Virginia’s Birdwood Golf Course on Monday.

All 12 teams played 36 holes Monday on the par 71 course that measures 7,116 yards in length. Florida State has the team lead at 27-under par, while hosts school Virginia is second at 11 under. Northwestern is third at 10 under, Liberty is fourth at two under, and the Tigers are fifth at one-under par. The teams will complete the tournament on Tuesday with 18 holes.

Clemson had a four-under-par score of 280 in the first round and three-over-par 287 in the second round.

Swanson had seven birdies on the way to an opening round 67 that included a 32 on the front nine. He tied for the sixth best score of the first round. He had a two over par 73 in the second round of the day to finish with a 140 total, good enough for 16th place in the medalist race after 36 holes. He had 10 birdies for the two rounds, tied for fourth in the field.

Augustsson was Mr. Consistency with his par of even-par scores of 71. His 142 total is tied for 29th in the field that includes three teams from the ACC and six teams from Power 4 Conferences. The East Carolina transfer had nine hole scores of 35-36 in each round.

Freshman Colin Salema, who is playing in his first tournament in the Clemson lineup since October, had a 69 in the first round on Monday morning, then shot 72 in the afternoon for a 141 total, tied for 21st. Salema had 10 birdies on the day, tied for fourth in the field with Swanson. He was also -3 on the par four holes, second best in the field.

Freshman Rich Wills had rounds of 73-73 for a 146 total, tied for 43rd. Senior Kian Rose was the non-counter in the morning round with a 76, but he came back to shoot even par 71 in the afternoon to tie for the best score of the second round among Tigers with Augustsson. Rose’s second round included an eagle on the par five 12th hole, the ninth eagle of his Clemson career. It was the 43rd round at par or better of his career.

Thomas Higgins is playing the tournament as an individual. He had a strong day with rounds of 69 and 72 for a 141 total, tied for 21st in the field.
