Clemson Needs To Look Out For Clemson

Jul 24, 2021, 10:36 PM

CU does not owe the ACC crap. We are the ACC. It's a very, very weak conference except for basketball and that is going to soon come to a halt with the top stars playing one and out.

We are weak because we had weak leadership for decades and that not only included Swofford, but college presidents and BOT who supported him.

The college football landscape has changed over night. The SEC is ALWAYS proactive and is once again getting out front so they will continue to be the big dog. CU needs to look out for CU and to heck with the ACC. We need to join the BIG DOG pack and not look back. The SEC may take us now, but not later. Sometimes, opportunity only comes knocking once. We should jump now at the chance to join the SEC. The games will be 10 times better for our fans. Recruiting will not suffer. We will still be one of the teams getting into the NCG playoffs if we are in the SEC. We will get more money. Heck, even our basketball and baseball recruiting may get better.

Playing LSU, Alabama, Ga, Auburn, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, etc. sure beats playing, WF, Duke, UNC, NCSU, Louisville, GT. etc. Who cares if any other ACC teams follow. If conferences expand and we are left with slim pickings in the ACC, we will not be playing a stronger schedule. And I think recruiting will suffer. Just my two cents worth.

Agree 100%. The time for conference loyalty has long passed.

100% agree with you about recruiting...

Jul 24, 2021, 10:50 PM

...we have made huge strides fairly recently in Texas (Cade Klubnik and others) and this must be protected. You get UT/OU moving to the SEC, and some of these stud players may start having second thoughts. Going to make it much tougher to recruit them.

I don't give a care about the ACC and never will. Only thing that matters is Clemson football.

100% agree. And I hope I can trust

Jul 24, 2021, 10:55 PM

Our administration to be doing what it needs to do proactively and decisively to protect our brand. I don’t give a crap if the rest of the ACC, save maybe FSU, disappears as a result

One thing is for sure, the SEC will not take care of Clemson. The ACC has not either. Time to stand up for ourselves against both conferences.

The next time the ACC does Clemson a favor will be the first time…

Clemson first..

I agree..

So here in lies the issue with college football and what is going on. The SEC will kill the overall brand of the sport and fans will lose interest because their teams cannot compete in the new world order.

If Clemson gets caught in the cannot compete category are you watching the SEC???

Not me I am out. Folks I am fearful that we are seeing the death of college football. Greed will kill. Fans pay the bills and this is where the money comes from. This requires national interest not regional.

WVU Stayed in Southern When ACC Formed

Jul 25, 2021, 4:16 AM

When the ACC was formed by schools breaking away from the Southern Conference, for whatever reason WVU stayed in the Southern. It took them to 1968 to find a way out and many years to catch up. Let's not make the same mistake.

Re: WVU Stayed in Southern When ACC Formed

The first jolt to the Southern conference was when the SEC split away in 1934. It took the ACC schools another TWENTY years to figure out that they need to as well. Reactionary and slow to make a move. The SEC has become the powerhouse of college athletics, the ACC is a pawn in the chess game.

I will give you one thing. You know how to structure an argument. However you do need to understand how things work.
Clemson will not ,nor can they join the SEC until the SEC "extends" the invitation to join. And that is not going to happen now ,or later because the SEC does not want ,nor do they even need Clemson.
Even the great and powerful Notre Dame can't just up and join the SEC because they are Notre Dame.
It's like trying to join Augusta National. No matter how big ,or powerful, or rich you are, you are not getting in just because your Irish or because you have that Tiger Logo on your resume.
So there is no chance of us joining the SEC. And even if the invitation were "extended", it would still have to be approved by by the Conference.
(Now I will admit I don't know if all the schools have to approve it, or just a majority but I can assure you Alabama, Georgia and the Gamecoots would all vote no).
Now if you want to play stronger teams, lobby to play those teams on a Home/Away two year deal.
As far as the ACC goes, hopefully the new commissioner will work with the existing conference members on how to make the conference stronger.
But I will leave that up to him and the powers that be. That is not part of my pay grade.

SEC does not want us

Jul 25, 2021, 7:41 AM

Some random guy on twitter is the only source I've seen indicating there might be interest on the SEC's part. We don't add much of anything $$ wise to the equation in terms of TV markets, huge fanbase, etc. and the money is ALL that matters. Also, as another poster noted, we would like get vetoed even if we got an invite.

That may all be true but don't assume the SEC doesn't want or wouldn't take Clemson strictly from a $$ perspective. It all depends on the SEC's end game. If the SEC's ultimate goal is to kill off the NCAA and become the de facto governing body of college sports - they will want as many of the powerhouses in college football in the SEC as possible. Adding Clemson would effectively concentrate all the CFP caliber teams minus Ohio State in the SEC. An SEC super conference would then have the power to dictate terms to a dying NCAA or abandon the NCAA all together.

I agree with you with regard to the long term

Jul 25, 2021, 9:03 AM

SEC may very well be trying to position itself as essentially the replacement to the NCAA and will absorb all high level teams. I mainly meant if DRAD is picking up the phone desperately calling the SEC commish begging to join, they ain't answering as it sits today.

Spot on!!.. Glad to see I am not the only one that feels that way. As I said in an earlier post, Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC has just made the ACC irrelevant and not the way forward for Clemson.

Weird times. Hopefully if we join the SEC, I never hear "SEC, SEC" chanted at Death Valley! That's worse than the Woo Hoo.

Exactly leave the old school thinkers and complainers in the dust because things are changing and CU better be on the train.
