Clemson A&M College

Ran across a post where LLB said Clemson University was once called " Agricultural & Mechanical". That is not accurate.

It was Clemson Agricultural & Military College.
I know, I was there, had a banner of that on my tin can wall.
There was a rifle rack in each room.
It was often called Clemson College, but not officially.

In the day (before me) all wore Military uniforms.
In my day all got uniforms, a buzz cut, and an M-1 rifle. We only used them for once a week mandatory drill.
All students were required to take 2 years of ROTC.

During WW11 Clemson sent 5,850 commissioned officers.

In 1964, the college was renamed Clemson University

I have an old Clemson pennant that has interlocking CAC on its wide area. Don’t know how old it is or anything else about it. I’m about as low tech as they get but will try to get someone to help post a picture. It’s got to be a hundred or older. Do you know when they stopped calling us Clemson Agricultural College?

Looking at photos of TAPS from the 30’s has it as Agricultural and Mechanical.
I’ve seen Clemson Agricultural College as well.

I bought a house in Aiken years ago from an estate and the man that owned it was a Clemson grad. Needless to say, the house was as is and a bunch of stuff that his kids didn't fight over was left there. Included was a Purple and Orange "Clemson A&M" pennant.

My diploma from 1952 has Clemson Agricultural College. It was military and we wore distinctive Clemson uniforms. The sculptor used my old uniform in 1993 for the cadet statue at the military heritage plaza at the top of Bowman Field. My ring has A&M College, which we all thought stood for Agriculture and Mechanical. I was company commander of company B-2 my senior year, and we were selected "Best Drilled Company" of the Corps (16 line companies and band company). Now, I have tooted my horn!!

I loved that M1 Tug...LOL..my basic training SGTs would make us
pull back the bolt, insert your thumb and release the bolt to have
us get an M1 thumb. Heavy weapon.

Fun to share my grandfather’s student handbook.
It has rules for a good sportsman and some cool old cheers.

My Grandad graduated from Clemson A&M (I think 1930 or 1931) and went on to serve in WWII. My Uncle (his son) started Clemson in 1964 the first year it was Clemson University and graduated in 1968.

I can relate. I took an ROTC class as an elective my freshman year. Learned all of the military rankings and insignia, marching drills, CU history, and many more. Got an A

My grandad graduated from Clemson A&M in 1950. He should have graduated in 1947 but just like everyone else at Clemson at that time he left school to serve in WWII. He had several Clemson rings over the years because he would wear them out working on tractors as a farm equipment dealer. I have a few of them and it’s cool because they say Clemson A&M College around the stone. In fact I had one of them melted down and made into to my wedding band when I got married. So I wear two Clemson rings

The college began full-time operations in June 1893 as Clemson Agricultural and Mechanical College and graduated its first class in December 1896.

I’m confused. Google (take it for what you think it’s worth) says it was founded as Clemson Agricultural College. My old pennant has the interlocking CAC. The website you posted says Agriculture and Mechanical. Tugaloo says Agriculture and Military

It became Clemson College in June (or maybe late May after graduation) of 1963. It became Clemson University in June (or maybe late May after graduation) in 1964. I graduated from Clemson University's first class in August of 1964, although I didn't walk across the stage as I was busy as "Acting" company commander in a parade at Ft Gordon, Ga. at the time.

My class ring read Clemson A&M College. I know the class of 1966 read Clemson University. Does anyone know what the class of 1965's ring said?

I always thought "A&M" (Texas, Florida, NC, Clemson, etc.) was Agricultural and Mechanical.
