According to some here -
Old guys here are the biggest sunshine pumpers around.
It's not the young guys that are the "we don't want to risk going back to the (fill in the blank with Hatfield, West, or Bowden) days crowd. --> Bluffton OrangeMan

I disagree as many older guys inhabiting the real world are the "risk takers" that some hiding in their Mom's basement are not.

Kids here on Tnet often slam the addled incompetence of older members.
Because some have survived to an older age these older folks are judged as being less informed and with lower IQ than the youth here who profess to know everything.
Is that accurate?

Most times it is a slam used in a debate as they have nothing else. Many have no real input to debate with except "Yo Mama".

My experience is most older folks and most younger folks are identical in most ways.
One exception is older folks may once have been part of the crowd who disparaged the elderly, but now know better. I never intended to make it to 30, but life kept getting better as I aged, so have stayed around.

Some old folks slide in to some form of dementia, but not most. Some young folks were born dumb, always have been dumb, and often express it here on Tnet.
Most folks here of any age are just average good folks. That has been my experience. Even folks I am positive are wrong, are civil and intelligent. I would say the average Tnetter is better educated, and better informed than the average person.

One good example who posts here often is LBB. You and I might often disagree as to what he posts, but his thinking is as sound as any here. It is very unlikely most here will be as physically and mentally sound at his age as obviously most of us are not that now. The odds of you (or me) being that sound (or alive) at his age is unlikely. There are hundreds here like LLB.

Higher IQ is one deal. Experience gives some folks wisdom. Education is a plus, and I don't just mean school. Having all only comes with age.

Once (against my will) I was forced to mentor kids about 20-25.
Having been that age once, knew what it was, the reverse for them not being true.
My first message was to think back 5 years ago how dumb you were. Compare that to "now".
I have found that to be true all my life.
At 78 I know a lot more than I did at 73. If you are different, you need to make changes.

I grew up in this 4 room Mill Hill house and had it all.

My parents were not high school grads, survived on a dirt farm.
I never went hungry like they did when kids.
They had high IQ and dreams that my siblings and I would do Ok.

We all did. Parents then and now are different.

My mom grew up on a mill hill in Anderson (Orr Mill). Back in the 50s 60s and 70s, they knew everyone who lived on their street and cared about each other. They were family people with shared values. People took pride in their homes, and it was a great place to live.

My aunt continued to live there in the 80s and 90s. The mill closed and the area started to go down. Folks saw it as cheap housing. Drugs infiltrated the area, and everything started to deteriorate.

Half the population has an IQ below 100. And 100 isn't very smart to begin with.

My 19 year old ‘know it all’ stepson smirked because I didn’t know how to do a certain thing on my iphone. I stared him straight the eye and said “you can laugh at me when you can support a family, which by the way includes you. Don’t you dare laugh at me until then. I don’t know how to use this stupid phone because I’m busy taking care of my family.” He slinked away, and I hope it sent a message, this younger generation are tech wizards, but they really don’t know how to do crap. The same kid couldn’t even change a bicycle tire, and I had to do it for him

It's called sin. Science is progressing but that's not a measure of general intelligence increasing it's a function of building upon the foundations created by previous generations.

One phrase comes to mind which exemplifies the concept, "The Greatest Generation." That, my generation was the last to respect its previous generations. Elders are no discarded rather than cherished.

With the loss of respect of God goes the respect for elders, one another and self, shame and humility. Human virtue is absent in much of our society and getting more rare day by day. Common courtesy is now inconvenient and heading toward a shameful absence.

Getting out of the sewer we call humanity makes facing death less dreadful.

I respect those who believe in god. I just wish those believers would stop blaming every ill of society on folks who do not subscribe to their religious views.

I doubt believers blame EVERY ill of society on ALL Non-Believers, as you imply. The overwhelming number of them would not blame you, if they knew you, I am sure. However, as an exercise in the degradation of society (which is what CT1988's post is about), if you were walking down a residential street and had a heart attack and needed help, would you prefer that the neighborhood was composed of committed Christians or just your average hodge-podge of people? How about if the same thing happened on a city street in Manhattan? How about the south side of Chicago? Who you surround yourself with matters. This is the concern a lot of people have about our society and the long term trend we have been seeing. Sure there are still many good people in this country (and the world), but society is degrading, there is no question about it.

I know more, have forgotten more, than a lot of these "youngins" will ever know or learn. I will be 50 next year, lived and learned a lot over those years and made some bad choices monetarily.

Education/knowledge is not given, it is learned and used.

We were indeed young once and know the troubles of youth and thinking you have it all figured out. Oh how little we actually knew then. Some things simply are not worth the hassle/worry which is one of the things I have found most resonating in life.

One of the main issues is that many people have many years of academics but they have very little wisdom. I believe that this is because we are teaching individuals what to think, not how to think.

I agree that education plays a role but life is the real teacher. I remember me being one of the new young guns showing up at work and from day one being told by the long time workers, that they have forgotten more about this job than I would ever know. All that did was make me want to prove them wrong and within a month of starting, I had figured out and completed a job that all the older guys couldn't believe because even some of them couldn't figure it out. I wasn't going to be stopped by a challenge and opportunity to grow. Actually, I was still the same way up until I retired and now I'm retired have new challenges.

Life ain't rocket science (unless you're a rocket scientist). Accept the challenge and don't be afraid to try new things. One of the sayings I kept at my desk was a saying that said "fail and fail often". The take away is not being afraid to try new things and new ways, but just don't keep repeating the mistakes.
Learn and become smarter.

Now, today, I know a 28 yo that is afraid to do anything because they may fail or make a mistake. They can play a video game but won't try new things. I guess it was the way they were raised. Growing up with social media vice being told to get out of the house and figure it out like we were. Their way to live life is scarey to me. Learn and grow by doing.

Some of the old guys clearly are inveterate sunshine pumpers.

Their theme seems to be "hands off Dabo so we don't go back to the Hatfield, West, or Bowden days". A lot of the younger posters, by contrast, were t even alive in those days, much less old enough to care about what happened back then.

Tyler from Spartanburg certainly doesn't care a it that. He cares about the future of Clemson football. So do I, and I'm one of the old guys. I'm definitely not a sunshine pumper, as you may have noticed. I'm a realist. I certainly hope that Clemson continues the one game positive trajectory.
