Wife and I are vacationing in Cancun for a few days and we came across bull fighting on Mexican TV. 40K people are packed into the stands around a bullring in Mexico City. The matadors toy around with the bull and stab him with several tranquilizer spears into his back, causing him to bleed out. Ultimately the bull starts getting "lugubrious" (like a Notre Dame football player this week) and he gets stabbed with a long spear to his death. The spectators go crazy. The bull never wins. I've got a feeling this form of entertainment wouldn't go over on American TV.

The spears are used to lower the head in preparation for the kill shot with the spears. Also, the head down helps with the matador’s work leading up to the sword shot.

In Spain, although slight, the bull has a chance to be saved. The bull fighters know and love the bulls. If one is valiant to a fault, the final matador (after the warm up guys) can ask the crowd to spare the bull. Doesn't happen that often, but some bulls survive. It may not fit our culture as some here seem to be saying but it is wise to understand the history and culture that this originates.

Nop. Was in Pamplona the week before the running of the bulls and it is alive and well. Also visited the stadium in Madrid.

I did the running of the bulls twice when I was young and visiting my family. Used to go to the bull fights in Sevilla when I lived there.

Went to one in Cancun years ago. A Mexican guy sitting next to me explained a lot of what was going on.
First he said that these guys are hacks. The real pros at this are in Mexico City or Spain.
Then he told me that over half of the people would probably leave after the first bull. When I asked him why, he said because most people don't know that they kill the bull. Sure enough there was a woman down in from videoing the event. this is how it went while she was filming, "Ole!...Ole!... Ole!...
.....Oh my God!....Oh my God!" And yes, they were gone.
And they were hacks. They couldn't seem to kill the bull. Finally some guys comes out and shoots the poor thing.
Do not recommend. Although the beef at Carlos and Charlie's was excellent.

I have no issue with a cultural display, but want nothing to do with it.
To each their own as they say, is is a tradition for them and they breed these bulls just for captivity and brutal deaths. It is a bit sad but again as a long standing tradition that is what those people know.

I have never been myself but seen video from some of my guests when I owned the hostel.
Seems cruel. First off, the bull is heavily drugged before the "match" so it isn't even fair.
I'd pull for the bull.
