One of Amazon‘s top 20 non-fiction books of the year is Blinds Spotts. In the last week, the author, John Hopkins’ Dr. Marty Makary, was appointed by Trump to be the new head of the FDA. A non-political book, it’s a medical review of modern medical crises of the last decades. The first chapter discusses that many people are now allergic to peanuts, which he writes numbers exploded since 2000 when parents were told not to give children peanuts until age 3. That “ban” had the opposite effect intended. From my reading this book, I think every nursing mother in the South should be eating boiled peanuts, plus giving them to a child in the first years, and as a result, their child will greatly reduce the chance of developing peanut allergies.

Each chapter takes on a different topic, looking at studies and how some were misinterpreted. The book is very interesting, plus very timely considering he will have a lot of influence and power going forward.

I like peanuts especially the ball park shelled ones in a Braves package.

But when eating them, I inevitably make a mess and my wife becomes irate. So my question is there a chapter on handling irate women?

Yes. Chapter 2 discussed that for menopausal women, hormone replacement therapy was having much success, until it was said in the early 2000s that it could lead to breast cancer. He goes to the data that shows the study that was based on only one women in 1000 got breast cancer. Statistically insignificant. The medical community has backed off that HRT causes breast cancer, but it’s still little used because of the earlier incorrect information. He says women have suffered because of this, and I would suggest their men have too, as you said. Lol.

Thanks for sharing! As a nurse, I find it fascinating how early dietary exposures, like introducing peanuts, can shape allergy risks. It’s a reminder of how evidence evolves and impacts practices. The book sounds like a valuable read for both nursing professionals and parents, especially with Dr. Makary’s new FDA role.https://mygradstoles.com/nursing-graduation-stole/
