Basketball Season Thoughts

We had a fantastic regular season, and disappointed in the NCAA tourney.

This season we set multiple school records, finished the ACC ranked 3rd in conference, and finished the season ranked 12th in the AP Poll. By all means, it was a historical season. It was probably the most fun regular season's that I have witnessed. We won the overwhelming majority of our games, and the losses were mostly close with many coming in overtime. For those that look for excuses to dismiss our team's success every year and say, "Our schedule was weak." Per Sports Reference, our SOS was right in the middle of the pack when comparing every season since 2000. Our SOS was ranked 13th in the last 25 seasons at 7.75. Our SRS or Strength of Record on the site is the second best in Clemson history, only coming behind 76-77 team led by Stan Rome and Tree Rollins. It was a great season, despite our disappointing ending.

Our play was disappointing to end the season. The main issue was shooting, especially from 3. When we aren't hitting our 3's, defenses can pack their defense down low and make it very tough for us in the paint too. Against UVA, we went 1-10. Against BC, we went 3-12 against VT, 4-21 against SMU, 5-15 vs. Louisville, and 9-30 against McNeese St. The majority of the ones that went in came in the last 5 minutes of the McNeese St. game. If we hit our 3's at our normal clip, we would have played DUke in the ACC Championship, and would be moving forward to the round of 32.

Sucks to lose games you should win especially at the end of the season, but that doesn't negate the other 95% of the season.

In the ACC tournament and the first round of the NCAAT. Often the last taste is the one you’re left with. I have to agree it was a great regular season. But poor coaching got us two ###### losses in a row when it mattered. I’m sure the rest of your circle jerk members will be here to defend you in 3, 2, 1 . . .

SRS is not good for comparison across seasons as it is based on an average within each season - which can obviously differ greatly. I know we’ve indulged in the past but it didn’t occur to me until I saw it discussed elsewhere in a completely different context.

And the postseason totally negates the 95%. It is why my contention has always been that a coach needs to consistently make the NCAA because those are the results that matter and if you aren’t there nearly every year then your odds of ever winning plummet.

What are your top 5 clemson basketball seasons? SRS seems fairly on point.

It certainly correlates but I wouldn’t use it to say anything in absolutes. I would rank them:

1) 89-90
2) 96-97
3) 86-87
4) 07-08
5) 23-24

Are these the best five teams in Clemson history? I don’t know, but probably not. What these seasons did have was my belief that these teams were capable of winning the conference or beating anyone. What Brad has lost is the sports equivalent of my ability to suspend disbelief. I know he’s not going to win a championship. So I’m just waiting for the wheels to come off. Let myself buy-in a little last year but all the season did was make him more money. Thought this year’s team was really starting to come together (even before Dillon took over as starter) and in every scenario where he could clinch something of meaning the team floundered. It’s beyond parody at this point. While good by w/l standards I don’t think there is anything special about this season. The SOS for the season might rank 17th but again, that’s based on the season average. It only ranks 65th in the country. You drop down the list and look at 83-84 which would be 23rd if you sort them but that was the 25th hardest schedule.

I would have to put 79-80 near the top if not at the top. To me 89-90 and 79-80 are the two best teams ever at CU.

I was too you for it to stick with me. Certainly one of our best teams.

The most maddening thing about the Brownell era is the complete lack of acknowledgment for just how hard the ACC used to be. Maybe we were the class clown but it was like being the class clown at MIT. Now we’re salutatorian at a directional school.

The most overachieving group of players in Clemson history.

At the same time, that was probably the most dissapointing game in Clemson history. Coupled with the worst half of basketball in Clemson history generates conflicting feelings.

There were definitely signs that something was off with the team in it's last few games. Dillon's importance was magnified and although I'm not much a Brownell critic, this exit was an embarrassment and he was embarrassingly outcouched and outprepared.

What an odd way to end the season.

Still love those guys and proud of them all

Agree. Thats why 2 things can be true at once. Great regular season and extremely disappointing tourney. You dont have to be disappointed on the season because of 1 game.

Dillon hunter proved to be a huge loss. Especially considering that meant more chauncey, heidbreder, and del. Heidbreder couldn't hit a 3, chauncey was a disaster, and del just couldn't get it going.

Barnes' slab 5 made the NCAA tournament in what was considered at the time the least talented roster in ACC history.

and at the time the ACC was good...

This year's team underachieved.

They were supposed to be good and they won games because the ACC was so bad but as soon as they faced real competition they folded.

That’s what the BrownL fans have been doing for years.
Giving us calculations, etc. to convince us that it’s better than we think it is.

They don’t understand that’s not how being a sports fan works.
If we think it sucks…it sucks.

Loved watching this team compete all year but unfortunately the pathetic state of ACC basketball was put on full display yesterday. It became obvious from the first lob jam that McNeese State was a much more athletic team than us. I think Dillon's loss exacerbated this...

The ACC sucked.

As soon as we started facing teams with a pulse, we went back to the 5 minute scoring droughts and inability to rebound.

with horrible turnovers.

and idiots like you were claiming this was our best team ever.

I think we can all agree that Brad Brownell is a horrible post season (ACC Tourney,NIT and NCAA) coach most of the time. Yes I'm including NIT. Who was that small school that knocked us out at home of the NIT just a few seasons back? Just another on a long list of embarrassments on his watch.
