In fairness, the men of KY are pretty slippery! But seriously, I think they will be pretty good this season. Stoops has done an awesome job building and to the administration's credit they have given him time to do it. While it's likely more to their indifference to anything other than round ball, they have let the guy do his thing.

Stoops has done a good job there. But, I think that they are on par with Wake who is actually ranked higher than Kentucky in the preseason poll (for what it's worth).

I'll say that if Kentucky is the toughest game of the season for a NC contending team that the schedule isn't bad at all. However, I would put Kentucky in higher company than Wake. They've recruited much better than Wake. Per 247 Kentucky was 14th in 2022, 35th in 2021, 25th in 2020, and 34th in 2019. Wake was 71st, 66th, 59th, and 59th during that time.
I'd also argue that Kentucky has been more consistent over the past few years than Wake. They both played Louisville last year. Kentucky beat Louisville 52-21 and Wake beat them 37-34. Kentucky led that game 45-7 early in the 4th and Wake beat Louisville on a FG with 22 seconds left.

The biggest thing Stoops will ultimately have to overcome

at Kentucky, other than the fact that they will always consider themselves a "basketball school" no matter what, is gaining the self belief that they belong at the top of at least their division in the SEC.
I don't think they get there. I think, instead, their wave has already crested, and they slide back down the trough some this year. And, outside their own locker room, not that many people will care.

The “sheep” of Kentucky are pretty slippery, what with their generations of micro-evolutionarily conferred survival instincts from having had to live amongst the lonely Deliverance like population of kentucky

The $EC Least division is blah. It's not like Manning and Tebow are rolling out there each week. If you are a top 10 team, the murderer's row of UF, Tenn, Mizzou, Vandy and Cooterville should not concern you. Kentucky is the clear 2nd best team there. Facts do not line up with the talking head narrative. Shocking!

I see it from both sides. The SEC East isn't great, and the Georgia schedule including Mississippi State and Auburn from the west isn't anything to lose sleep over. So to act as if Georgia is going to be out there facing the test of their lives every single week is overblown.
I think what makes the SEC tough is they have several teams based on recruiting that have potential each season to put together a great season. It's just that teams like Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, and even LSU aside from the NC year have typically underperformed more times than not in recent years. It's a lot like FSU and Miami in the ACC. They've both struggled a lot over recent years, but I don't think anyone would be shocked if either team got on track and started to be a contender again simply based on the assumed amount of talent on their rosters each year.
I also think that aside from Vandy the bottom of the SEC is usually a little tougher than most other conferences. I'm not saying they don't have some awful teams each year, but at least teams like Arkansas, Missouri, South Carolina, Ole Miss, etc... are pouring a ton of money and resources into trying to improve. I'm not saying that schools such as Wake, Syracuse, Duke, etc... would rather not win, but they're never going to have the fan backing or resources to put into trying to improve compared to most of the SEC.
