Anybody ever heard of swollen lug nuts?

4

Jan 31, 2023, 10:29 AM

Reminds me of Brevin Galloway but I am at a Chevy service department & they say I have 8 swollen lug nuts that are hard to remove & need replacement at $131. Never heard of a truck having nut issues that bad.

Yes...it's a real issue...

5

Jan 31, 2023, 10:34 AM

that is caused when water penetrates the gap between the decorative caps and the actual lug nuts causing rust and swelling.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

So you’re saying a poor component design is NOT a conspiracy?

Jan 31, 2023, 1:31 PM

Can’t we just be outraged and call it a conspiracy?

Actually had similar experience on Ford truck and inspected the defective lug nuts.

It's actually caused by over tightening with an impact wrench instead of using a torque wrench.
Buttttt I think the dealer is full of Bravo Sierra.

If they are talking nuts, you getting poked. That's over $16 per nut. Now if they talking studs you probably getting a deal

just less than $10 each so I got out with less than 85 bucks added to the tire rotation.

Hallmark trait of a Ford, bits and pieces go bad … eventually draining your wallet on trivial but critical components.

Owned four, never again.

Key word here was Chevy ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have seen lug nuts actually gall the threads and simply

2

Jan 31, 2023, 10:54 AM

refuse to come off. Whenever that happens, the only cure is to wring off the lug, knock out the remnant stub, and install a new one. It is a royal pain in ye olde buttocks.

And, this is a more "modern" issue, as modern lug studs are often plated in some way, whereas on older cars, the stud was just black steel, and the lug NUT was the only thing that was cadmium or zinc plated.

And yes, I have also experienced what another poster said, idiot tire man used an impact wrench on the plastic lug nuts on my hubcaps, and proceeded to destroy 18 out of 20.

Another issue is where they were made. Inferior steel is used in China and if they don't break, the threads will strip after a few tightenings.

My Ford Escape (NOTE: Do not buy this car) had some that were swollen. It is a common problem. As was said earlier, water gets inside the cap of the lugnut and expands. I had one I had to take a hammer, screwdriver, and pliers to and break the cap and peel it off of the lugnut so I could remove it. I bought a full set of new lugnuts and replaced all as soon as I could. Others were swollen but was able to get the socket on. Do the work yourself and save $100.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, happened to mine last year

2

Jan 31, 2023, 11:36 AM

Ford dealership told me the lugs on my truck were made out of aluminum clad steel (or something close to that) and that the steel underneath rusts and swells and then causes the aluminum on the outside to crack. Once that gets to a certain point the wrench doesn't fit properly. Sounded like crappy design to me.

Ford dealership told me same thing about my F150. Yes, a crappy design and I insisted they replace under warranty (they did). Must be the new money making scheme for the industry...build temporary disposable lug nuts and resell better ones at double the cost.

At least we hope they are better ones

I’ve had two GM vehicles exhibit this problem. The lugs have a chrome metal “cap” over cheaper steel. They corrode and swell making it harder to get a wrench on them. I’ve had my oil change place decline to rotate my tires because they don’t want liability if they damage a lug. It’s a total cost cutting attempt by GM so it does tick me off.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Haven't heard. But I was told by the dealer

Jan 31, 2023, 8:15 PM

that my fuel injector needed to be replaced for an exorbitant price.

Yet I had it flushed out for much less by a generic service.

Re: Anybody ever heard of swollen lug nuts?

Jan 31, 2023, 8:32 PM

I had the same thing happen with the lug nuts on my Camry and it’s from over tightening with an impact wrench. Basically, however rotates your tires did the damage. They are supposed to use a torch wrench to tighten them to a specific spec, but nobody follows that. I bought replacements on line for a fraction of the cost.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And your lug wrench will not work either.

Feb 1, 2023, 12:47 PM

I came to the same conclusion as you.

Costco told us they were "swollen" from rust.

I removed the chrome cover and there was no rust or corrosion. The chrome cover was deformed from the use of impact wrenches.

Bought replacements from Amazon.

Keep in mind that if the shop has trouble removing them, you will never get that lug wrench to work if you have a flat on the side of the road.
