ACC NOTES
ESPN’s College Gameday Headed to California
ESPN’s College GameDay Built by The Home Depot will broadcast live for the first time from Berkeley, California, for Week 6. The California Golden Bears (3-1, 0-1 ACC) will host the No. 8 nationally ranked Miami Hurricanes (5-0, 1-0 ACC) in Cal’s first-ever home ACC contest on Saturday, October 5, at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN. ESPN’s College Gameday kicked off the 2024 college football season in Ireland in Week 0 at the Aer Lingus College Football Classic between Florida State and Georgia Tech. It was the first time that the show was broadcast outside of the United States.
Bowden & Dabo
Clemson’s Dabo Swinney owns 173 career wins, which is tied for the most with Bobby Bowden (173) as the most wins by a head coach while coaching at an ACC program. This week, Swinney will attempt to surpass the legendary Bobby Bowden for the most career head coaching victories while leading an ACC program. Coincidentally, Swinney will look to accomplish this feat against Bowden’s old team in Florida State in Tallahassee, Florida, against one of his former quarterbacks in DJ Uiagalelei, who played for Swinney and the Clemson Tigers from 2020-22. Swinney and Bowden are the only head coaches to lead an ACC program to 150 wins or more in the conference’s 72-year history.
ACC in the Bay
The ACC will take over the Bay Area this weekend, as both Cal and Stanford will be hosting their first-ever ACC football games since joining the league in August. Stanford will host Virginia Tech at 3:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network, while Cal will host No. 8 Miami at 10 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN. ESPN’s College Gameday will also be in Berkeley on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. ET. A commemorative coin will used as part of the coin toss for both contests to mark the historical events, as the two schools usher in a new era in their programs’ history.
Conference Play in Full Effect Beginning Week 6
After back-to-back weeks of four ACC conference games over Weeks 4 and 5, Week 6 will see eight conference matchups as all 17 teams are in action. As part of the Week 6 conference slate, both Cal and Stanford will be hosting their first-ever home ACC contests since joining the league as full-time members this summer.
Undefeated Starts in 2024
Three ACC teams remain undefeated after the first five weeks of the 2024 college football season - Miami (5-0), Duke (5-0) and Pitt (4-0). The Miami Hurricanes are 5-0 for the first time since 2017. Under head coach Mark Richt, the Canes started the season at 10-0 went 10-3 that season and reached the ACC Football Championship Game, falling to No. 1 Clemson 38-3. The Duke Blue Devils are 5-0 for the first time since 1994. That season, Duke started the year at 7-0 under and played in the Hall of Fame Bowl under head coach Fred Goldsmith. The Blue Devils have now won seven consecutive games dating back to the end of the 2023 season, which is the longest active streak in the ACC. The Pitt Panthers, who had an open week last week, are 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 2000. That season, Pitt finished the year at 7-5 and played in the Insight.com Bowl. The Panthers completed an undefeated non-conference slate for the first time in program history. Pitt last opened the season with a 5-0 record in 1991.
Three Teams Ranked in the Latest AP and Coaches Top 25 Polls
For the third straight week, the ACC has the same three teams ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll this week (September 29) - Miami (No. 8), Clemson (No. 15) and Louisville (No. 22). The same three ACC teams were ranked in the most recent top 25 of the US LBM Coaches Poll (September 29) - Miami (No. 8), Clemson (No. 14) and Louisville (No. 22). Four other ACC teams received votes in either of the top 25 national polls – Pitt, Duke, SMU and Boston College.
