Never thought I'd see a punter leave after his Jr year to go to the NFL but it worked out for him.

Matcher was an all-pro his rookie year in the NFL and then injuries kept him down.

Hatcher was the second best punter on his high school team at Cheraw S.C. The top punter was Harry Newsome who went to Wake Forest and was first team all conference. Harry went pro as well.

I think Hatcher hit the overhead scoreboard in the Super Dome.

Agree. Dale Hatcher is one of only two punters to ever hit

the N.O. Dome ceiling. This happened during our win over Tulane in 1981.

I once saw Hatcher kick a one yard punt. I think it was against Maryland, and he kicked the ball so high it went above the upper deck and caught the wind blowing backwards. I think the hangtime was about 15 minutes.

He was kinking into a strong wind from the 17, ball ended up at the 21. Maryland fumbled it back 3 plays later in a tight game Clemson won 24-22.

Holy cow. That is an awesome video of that punt going straight backwards into the wind. Man 40mph that game. Crazy.

Hatcher, IMO. He certainly had the strongest leg of anybody in my memory. He didn't get the nickname "Mr. Thunderfoot" for nothing.

But Teasdall’s pass to C Wilkins may be the biggest play by a punter I’ve seen.

Well I would think twice of coming if I had to be a punter with Watson or Lawrence running the offense. But to stay on topic, shows you how good of a recruiter Danny Ford was as well. Dabo is on fire but Danny still has some of the best Tigers of all time!

'who was the best,' discussions. It's always one of those topics which younger Clemson fans may not have lived through past days when (put name here) played.
The number of games has changed since the 1980s and before. We might have had someone kicking in the 1930 when we only played a handful of games. How could he compete with today's kickers knowing that they may participate in 15 games?
The stat's records are not comparable to those of yesteryear.

Coach Howard had a pretty darned good punter named Eddie Werntz as I remember.

Sims in the late 70's was the "best punter in Clemson history" until those two came along.
