After seeing 5 star punter commit,

Jul 28, 2021, 6:51 PM

Who was or is Clemson's best puner?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pinion certainly comes to mind

Jul 28, 2021, 6:59 PM

Never thought I'd see a punter leave after his Jr year to go to the NFL but it worked out for him.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Garcocki left after his jr year, but Hatcher was best

Jul 28, 2021, 7:35 PM

Matcher was an all-pro his rookie year in the NFL and then injuries kept him down.

keburd is brokk***

Hatcher was the second best punter on his high school team at Cheraw S.C.
The top punter was Harry Newsome who went to Wake Forest and was first team all conference. Harry went pro as well.

gonna go with Dale Hatcher here...

Jul 28, 2021, 7:03 PM

I remember watching Hatcher in the Valley when he punted the crowd would oooo and ahhh over his hang time.

1. Hatcher
2. Gardocki

I think Hatcher hit the overhead scoreboard in the Super Dome.

Jul 28, 2021, 9:00 PM

I was there and saw it. He hit it multiple times in pre game .

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. Dale Hatcher is one of only two punters to ever hit

Jul 28, 2021, 8:43 PM [ in reply to Dale Hatcher...not even close********** ]

the N.O. Dome ceiling. This happened during our win over Tulane in 1981.

Re: After seeing 5 star punter commit,

I once saw Hatcher kick a one yard punt. I think it was against Maryland, and he kicked the ball so high it went above the upper deck and caught the wind blowing backwards. I think the hangtime was about 15 minutes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At Maryland in '82

Jul 28, 2021, 7:48 PM

He was kinking into a strong wind from the 17,
ball ended up at the 21. Maryland fumbled it
back 3 plays later in a tight game Clemson won
24-22.

Holy cow. That is an awesome video of that punt going straight backwards into the wind. Man 40mph that game. Crazy.

I still remember Jim Philips saying something like that***

Re: After seeing 5 star punter commit,

Hatcher, IMO. He certainly had the strongest leg of anybody in my memory. He didn't get the nickname "Mr. Thunderfoot" for nothing.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For anyone that saw Dale Hatcher there's no doubt***

Jul 28, 2021, 7:34 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Ol' Thunderfoot", as Jim Phillips dubbed him.

Jul 29, 2021, 2:04 PM

:)

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe not the best pure punter

Jul 28, 2021, 9:10 PM

But Teasdall’s pass to C Wilkins may be the biggest play by a punter I’ve seen.

Re: After seeing 5 star punter commit,

I would go with Gardocki with Hatcher close behind.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hatcher was better ,***

Jul 28, 2021, 10:02 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gardocki

Jul 28, 2021, 9:40 PM

I’d love to see us with a lethal punter again. It will only help Venables be even better

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Gardocki

Jul 28, 2021, 10:32 PM

Well I would think twice of coming if I had to be a punter with Watson or Lawrence running the offense. But to stay on topic, shows you how good of a recruiter Danny Ford was as well. Dabo is on fire but Danny still has some of the best Tigers of all time!

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't submit a candidate for these...

Jul 29, 2021, 2:15 PM

'who was the best,' discussions. It's always one of those topics which younger Clemson fans may not have lived through past days when (put name here) played.

The number of games has changed since the 1980s and before. We might have had someone kicking in the 1930 when we only played a handful of games. How could he compete with today's kickers knowing that they may participate in 15 games?

The stat's records are not comparable to those of yesteryear.

Re: After seeing 5 star punter commit,

Coach Howard had a pretty darned good punter named Eddie Werntz as I remember.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can't argue with Hatcher & Gardocki at the very top, but David

Jul 29, 2021, 4:02 PM

Sims in the late 70's was the "best punter in Clemson history" until those two came along.

Pinion was really good. He left after his junior season too, I believe.

We don't punt.***
