Actually, this has been discussed previously. The ND folks are happy with this arrangement. They know if they go 11-1 or 12-0, they will get to host a home game in the Playoff. The wording from the ND Athletic Director was something along the lines of (and I'm not direct quoting), "Other schools who play a conference championship will have played a 13th game and earn a bye. We will get our 13th game as a home game."

So they believe the trade-off is well worth it.

Right. They already got their bye during conf. champ. week.***

We are assuming they will be 12-0 and 11-1? 9-3/8-4 is...

Dec 1, 2022, 12:49 PM [ in reply to Re: Let's welcome Notre Dame to the ACC ... ]

probably more likely based on the last 30 years without Brian Kelly there.

Two reasons why Clemson won't welcome ND into ACC.

Dec 1, 2022, 12:38 PM [ in reply to Let's welcome Notre Dame to the ACC ... ]

1. Clemson will be in the SEC.
2. ND will join the B1G.

They will lose their GOR in the other sports until 2036***

ND might join a nationwide college football league, but they are never going to join the BigTen in its current format.

But they can get a 1st round home game...ND probably did the math on that and was good.

Lucky Johnson

Just as likely to get a 1st round road game.***

Nor should they. Conference champs get only byes

Dec 1, 2022, 12:07 PM

Ultimately, there will be 4 major conferences. Those who do not belong to any of those 4 will have to be selected as at-large teams and have a play-in game. With a 12-team playoff, the second round pits the 4 Conference champs against the winners of the play-in games. At large teams must win 4 games to be National Champs.

GoTiguhs!!

Oh but they DO get a bye

Dec 1, 2022, 12:08 PM

Because they dont even play in a conference championship game like everyone else has to do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you play in a conference championship game then you play

Dec 1, 2022, 12:13 PM

one extra game than Notre Dame.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, nothing stopping from the conferences going

Dec 1, 2022, 12:59 PM

Back to the old model of declaring champ after reg season/12 games…. There could be more damage to a conf as to getting their best or multi teams in by playing the game

Re: Well, nothing stopping from the conferences going

Dec 1, 2022, 3:05 PM

Good point but there's way too much money riding on the championship games. I can't see them ever giving that up.

Dec 1, 2022, 2:59 PM

LOL at the cockiness of Notre Dame - our 13th game will be a "Home Game"

They are assuming they are a high enough seed to get to host...... most years they will probably be playing on the road in the playoffs if they make it in....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a really nice troll there putting

Dec 1, 2022, 3:02 PM

ND in parentheses after UConn.

Dec 1, 2022, 3:10 PM

And that’s fair because they also won’t ever play in a conference championship game.
