ACC men's basketball struggling

I know some want to do their best Baghdad Bob impression but at this point its pretty hard to argue. Even our own ACC coaches are saying the conference isn't that good. In fact, I'd say it was barely mediocre, probably the 4th best conference this year.

When the NCAA Tournament field is unveiled Sunday, it is expected to include just three or four of the ACC’s 18 teams — the smallest percentage of conference teams in the field since tournament expansion four decades ago.

“We've got to win games in the nonconference,” Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry said. “We can't get waxed by the SEC in the league thing. We've got to win games in that.”

“We’re not the ACC of old,” Wake Forest coach Steve Forbes said.

"This league's gotta do a better job of handling the NIL and the Transfer Portal and get stronger. This conference, for years, was the best. And I'm telling you right now, it has taken a real hit." ~ Vitale

Define struggling? Because the SEC got 14 teams in? Mind you 6 of which have a losing record in conference play...

Teams like Texas, who is 6-12 in conference play, OU (6-12), Arkansas (8-10), UGA (8-10), Vandy (8-10_ and Miss St (8-10) have absolutely ZERO business playing in this tournament. The sooner some of you people realize that the SEC is a national brand, especially for stakeholders like ESPN, the sooner you will understand the narrative and love affair.

Kind of hard to make any argument to the contrary. Thats right, the 16th place SEC team with a 2-20 conference record, 12-20 overall, beat Clemson. Thats how pathetic the ACC is. So yes, please continue to brag about how awesome our record is.

I'm not arguing our record....I'm arguing that a 20 win team that has over half their wins from beating the #### out of lower tier programs should not be in the tourney...

It is part of the article's title.

But you can't argue with he lowest number of teams in the tournament in a decade+? Or the absolute butt whipping the SEC put on the ACC. Even ACC coaches are saying it, are they "you people"?

ESPn does not pick the teams, the selection committee has no financial stake in this. But agree, never should 14 teams from one conference get in, especially with losing records. Kentucky getting a 3 seed is a joke. What makes CBB so exciting is any team can beat any team on a good night, now it is just SEC tourny part2.

What is the point of of continually arguing the obvious? ACC teams have not kept up in terms of hiring top shelf coaches and more importantly, investing NIL $ which are required to be competitive in today’s environment. I read recently that NCSU and VT were planning to up their NIL game this off season. Others need to follow suit

Glad we both agree that its pointless to argue that the ACC isn't at its weakest in a decade and with no real signs to get back on its rightful throne as the pre-eminent men's BBall conference.

We discussed this topic ad nauseam and agreed it is very weak in terms of depth. The top seems to be as strong as ever. The ACC teams need to up their NIL and spend the money on the best available coaches. What did I miss?

I dont think you missed anything. I agree with you. I think the exodus of coaching strength is the biggest factor with NIL being second.

There are still those who think the ACC being weak is overblown. I do not, I think its blown just right.

Four HOF Coaches left. It is the major reason for the drop off

Plus Hamilton, another likely HOF’er, in his last year.

The money has obviously bought the SEC quality teams and doubt that will change any time soon.

Much like football, the ACC has a lot of small schools, lots of private schools, universities that have always made academics a priority, so it is challenging to beat out schools that see sports differently and have almost unlimited budgets.

The ACC should and will get better but as Coach Alford said, it’s not the same game it used to be. I suspect 3 - 5 teams is going to be the norm.

Struggling or not, there is no way that the SEC should have gotten 14 teams in. It is the same narrative in football "that we are so good and strong up and down the conference that conference wins are special and losses should not count".

How come the ACC never got 8 or 10 teams in when we were considered elite? I am not making the case that our conference is good and we deserved more, but the double standard when it comes to the SEC. Anyone remember a few no so many years back where the Easy Division of SEC football was hot garbage and the West not a lot better? Did we hear a lot of sports outlets talking about how bad the sucked?

I guess the ACC's reluctance to accept cheating for so long finally caught up to us. The SEC has a huge jump once it became legal!

athletic departments making a better commitment to funding programs, revenue sharing, NIL, etc.

We are obviously one of the nation's 20-25 best programs right now, regardless of the ACC, as we have proven it against nonconference opponents the last few years. However, it would sure be nice to play a tougher conference schedule and have more credibility going into postseason play.

It gets old hearing how bad the ACC is. You don't hear it as much about football, even though ACC football is worse than ACC basketball. Perhaps that is because ACC football never really had the reputation for being strong.

I will strongly disagree that we dont hear it about football. We hear it consistently from media, from podcasters and our own fans.

The difference is in BBall we are just not used to hearing it and now its flat out undeniable. ACC BBall sycophants just haven't adjusted.

But its no more constant than it is in football season. Its not even close. ACC has dropped from consensus #1/#2 BBall conference just 10yrs ago and now sits at 4th, some might argue 5th this year. I think that is what has some covering their ears and screaming "stop it stop it stop it" (figuratively)

ACC football is more consistently 3rd best, with as probably many years being #2 as being #4
