247Sports midseason ACC basketball tiers

247Sports has Duke in a tier all by itself, and no other ACC team even in the next tier.
The outlook assesses five tiers, where Duke is in the 'title contenders' group, no other ACC team is in the 'title dark horses' and then Clemson is among the teams in Tier 3 for 'NCAA Tournament bound' programs.
On Duke: Current record: 14-2, 6-0 in ACC play
The skinny: Winning basketball games gets a whole lot easier when you have a superstar, an offense that generates an enormous batch of unguarded catch-and-shoot treys and a defense that turns everyone's water off at the rim. That's what Duke is working with right now. Cooper Flagg is turning in an all-time season that's right on par with Zach Edey's (second) National Player of the Year campaign. And, this supporting cast is teeming with size and shooting.
The rim defense point deserves reiteration. A team with a top-five rim defense has earned a No. 1 seed in three consecutive seasons. Duke isn't in the top 5 yet –– it rates 19th nationally –– but it's not far away, either. Opponents are shooting a measly 50% at the rim when Duke has Flagg and Khaman Maluach on the floor together. That rates in the 99th percentile, per CBB Analytics. Duke is forcing teams to take so many contested, off-the-dribble jumpers because venturing into the paint is a terrible strategy.
On Clemson: Current record: 13-4, 5-1 in ACC play
The skinny: Clemson is shaping up to be Duke's biggest challenger for the ACC crown. You better have size or you're going to get overmatched in a hurry against the Blue Devils. Clemson has that. The Tigers are an old, veteran squad that can defend and Brad Brownell can mismatch hunt with Ian Schieffelin, Viktor Lakhin or Chauncey Wiggins at any point. Oh, and it helps to have an All-League guard. Chase Hunter is putting together an outstanding campaign with elite efficiency marks at all three levels. There aren't many ACC guards who opposing coaches would take over Hunter.
Clemson is clearly good, but can the Tigers be great?
Clemson is joined in that group by Louisville, UNC and Pitt. Tonight's opponent Georgia Tech is Tier 5 and the Tigers are favored by 5 for the 9 p.m. tip (ACCN).

IMHO, Clemson is never going to be great under CBB...

His team are just entirely too inconsistent. Even his better teams struggled with consistency and losing multiple games they shouldn't throughout the year, which brings me to tonight's game at Georgia Tech. This is a game that Clemson should absolutely win, but exactly the kind of game that CBB teams will lose and leave fans scratching their heads.

over a 30+ game season.
All college basketball teams lose games they shouldn't.
These tendencies are not unique to Clemson. They are part of college basketball.

For all the criticism he gets, we just don't get NBA lottery type talent.
We don't typically get NBA type talent at all.
You look at all the "great" coaches and they all had that talent and usually that level of talent coming off the bench.
UNC has had players make NBA rosters that never started at UNC...

We had a great team only last year. Guess you missed it

Schieff not being healthy is a big deal. Clutch play on the road TBD.***
