DB development

Feb 15, 2021, 11:54 AM

Mike Reed’s resume is impressive, especially at CB. Way too early to tell with Mickey Conn, but Lannden Zanders looks like a lock to get drafted. The jury is still out on the rest of the safeties.

5 star, Mackensie Alexander, 30 (2nd)
4 star, AJ Terrell, 55 (1st)
4 star, Trayvon Mullen, 63 (2nd)
4 star, Mark Fields, 93 (undrafted)
4 star, LeAnthony Williams, 203 (undrafted)
4 star, Jayron Kearse, 223 (7th)
4 star, Cordrea Tankersley, 283 (3rd)
4 star, Van Smith, 321 (undrafted)
3 star, Adrian Baker, 363 (undrafted)
3 star, Tanner Muse, 709 (3rd)
3 star, Jadar Johnson, 779 (undrafted)
3 star, TJ Green, 812 (2nd)
3 star, Denzel Johnson, 1318 (undrafted)
3 star, Marcus Edmond, 1449 (undrafted)
3 star, K’Von Wallace, 1504 (4th)
2 star, Ryan Carter, 2818 (undrafted)

TBD...

5 star, Andrew Booth, 23 (lock)
5 star, Derion Kendrick, 26 (lock)
4 star, Fred Davis, 53 (lock)
4 star, Mario Goodrich, 114 (doubtful)
4 star, Nate Wiggins, 118 (IDK)
4 star, Sheridan Jones, 130 (lock)

I think we've all given our secondary a hard time here and there, but I think it's fair to point out that our scheme involves bringing a lot of pressure and leaving our secondary with a lot of one on one matchups. It's hard for any DB to maintain coverage in today's game if that pressure doesn't get to the QB. I do hope our safeties behind Turner develop this offseason because we had a large drop in production whenever Turner wasn't out there.

I am really enjoying these. Thanks for taking the time!

QB/RB and WR/TE are the only groups I have left. I kind of think both will tell a similar story though. A lot of undrafted players, but a clear improvement due to recruiting, which makes the future look even brighter.

I was thinking about comparing our recruiting classes under Dabo. Will probably break them up into 4 year windows.

I do enjoy these posts. But the more positions you put up the more irrelevant they become for me. I don’t think using the draft is an accurate way to measure player development. Although it does have some weight. Take Ryan Carter out of this bunch. He was a nobody when he arrived. He only came because the trio of Gallman, Carter, and Nkemdiche. But by the end of his four years he had “developed” into a great great football player. Many others on your lists are the same.

I do enjoy reading out draft success though and would love you to do one on the Dline over the last decade. Include the ends.

Thank you!

Zanders? I didn't think he played well. Charleston is much better at this point, imo. I also like what we have seen out of Thornton and Phillips, though limited. I think Phillips will be used more in the SAM behind Trenton with Jones gone.

Couldn’t disagree more on Zanders at this point. Who knows what the future holds but Zanders is a lock to not get drafted so far. He has shown poor coverage skills, a knack for being out of position, and the inability to make up ground when caught out of position. None of those traits translate to being an NFL safety to this point in his career. I hope you are right and he matures as a player and becomes a top safety and gets drafted. I do agree with Booth, Kendrick, and Davis.

He was only a sophomore, so he has plenty of time to get better. I can remember Tanner Muse struggling in coverage early in his career as well. Zanders has all the physical tools to be an NFL safety. And it appears like he’s a really hard worker.

Tanner could at least tackle in space and had linebacker size. Sanders has a long way to go to play at the next level ( struggles with assignment, can’t cover and can’t tackle) not many players fit that mold in the nfl. I hope and pray he improves because if I am Iva he and turner would be where I attack come September. Dk better play better than he has played in the playoffs the last two years or he is at best an udfa in the nfl.

Sanders a lock to get drafted? Well, I can at least compare him to a couple of All Pro players. Hair like Polamolu, tackles like Deion. All I seem to ever recall is a lot of hair running after a missed play. Will he probably get drafted? Likely, but he sure needs to improve a lot in my opinion to hit that next level.

Very interesting information. I noticed that all of these players, with exception of TJ Green & DK, were all recruited when Reed oversaw total secondary. All of the TBD category are all CB's recruited by Reed. After 4 years it appears Conn is not doing well at recruiting top tier Safeties. It appears that the current group of Safeties are not athletic enough to provide the deep middle of the field support that CBV scheme requires of Safeties. Conn may be a good coach, but right now it appears he's not connecting with the top tier prospects at the safety position like Clemson is getting at CB, WR, LB, QB and DL. May be time to end the friends & family plan regarding the secondary. Maybe let Conn have special teams and give secondary back to Reed.

messages out there, please add the year each guy was in the draft. Putting it in chronological order would give a much better idea of advances in recruiting or development.

Good job to rightfully give Reed credit for the development of Muse and Wallace. Mickey Conn’s development and recruitment of safeties is TBD. I’ll admit I was less than impressed with the product he put on the field last year.
