Zac Brooks, at 6'1" weighs 190 lbs. after entering Clemson

at 180 over a year ago.

Given the access to the proper weight training equipment and instruction along with the proper food and supplements and nutritional instruction and considering the scholarship incentive, you would think a youngster could have much more success gaining muscle and strength than that.

Body chemistry varies with each individual so you cannot predict what a player might do in this regard. Some people just don't gain weight easily while others put on pounds watching a Sonic commercial.
I watched Brooks very closely when I attended practice during youth day and he seems to be pretty solid to me. I can see him being a contributor this season. Regardless of what some of the nay sayers think, our S and C program is quite good. Once Dabo installs this toughness into the team, Clemson will be right up there. You can see it coming ... if you look at things in a positive way.

I thought that he was 174 at weigh in last year. I might be wrong, but I remember thinking that he was smaller than advertised. Maybe we need to do what bama does and bye some deer antler!

I talked to Brooks after a game last fall. He's not 6'1" and I doubt he weighed 180.

He was eating a pizza that they get after games. He said it was his second one and he's trying to gain weight. He said hew was eating 6 times a day, but thought his metabolism was defeating weight gain.

As an aside, the nicest, yes sir-no sir guy you'd ever want to meet.

I'd be willing to bet the farm that the ten pounds he put on isn't all lean muscle either.

If it ever appears that a guy can put on a #### ton of muscle over a years time (here's looking at you $EC), then I would expect the use of anabolic steroids and IGFs. That, or that individuals genes is the holy grail when it comes to building muscle. Your body is much more ready and willing to put on fat for energy reserves than it is spending energy creating muscle.

my neighbor in johnston put on 15 pounds of muscle in 9 months at fike. He came in skinny as a rail and was a bit of a late bloomer that was starting to fill out. To say and 18 year old can not do it is very far fetched.

It is when a 3rd year 225 DE jumps to 260 that makes you scratch your head.

everyone inflates their height and weight from high school....he was probably closer to 170...adding 20 lbs of muscle is incredible acheivement in a year.

of who stands where..but I really don't think you were being sincere the other day. But overall I agree, as long as we're not trying to place ourselves above others, or not being immature, or not being hypocritical, in addition to being sincere, then we'll be just fine.

To go full circle here, I believe Zac's reported HS weight was probably pretty close to what it actually was if not dead nuts. Too, I think Zac Brooks 10 pounds (probably more by season's start) will do him some good. Needs to get a little lower to the ground though so he can shift his CG.

mass while practicing, doing drills, and engaging in the level of conditioning these guys do; especially for a kid that age who is a hard-gainer by nature. It would be much easier if all he did was lift heavy, eat, and rest.

don't have to maintian conditioning for speed and endurance. Brooks could save all his calories and turn into a bodybuilt spark-plug. But he needs to be able to run, cut and endure.

Lessons learned, Zac Brooks focused on bulking up to breakout

A unanimous four-star prospect out of high school, Zac Brooks didn’t redshirt last season, but he also didn’t have the year expected – by his standards especially.

The rising sophomore running back played only 65 snaps, fourth on the depth chart, averaging 4.6 yards per on 26 carries.

“I’d probably grade (2012) as a low ‘B’ – high ‘C’ just because I didn’t play like I expected to out of high school,” Brooks said. “But it was a little different for me and I didn’t know how I was supposed to step up.”

Speed of the game, although clichéd he says, was a contributing factor.

“You go from being the fastest to the top-20 fastest,” Brooks said. “Everybody out there got speed. It’s just a big-time change of pace.”

And that changes running-style.

“You got to understand instead of running to the sideline all the time – you got to actually hit the hole and burst through the hole,” he said. “You can’t always escape to the sidelines. It was a big adaptation for me.”

Pass protection also, or the lack thereof, is what keeps many a talented tailback off the field, and for Brooks, that was no different.

“It was at the beginning, but as the year went on I got used to it,” the Jonesboro, Ark. product said. “(I) started recognizing it better, then they switched it up on me again. I’m still not where I need to be with my blocking assignments, but I will get there.”

How does he get there?

“I just have to become more knowledgeable in the offense,” said Brooks. “And when I start to get more confident in the offense, then those calls will be a lot easier for me.”

With Andre Ellington out of the picture, Brooks is one of three scholarship backs competing for playing time this spring – senior Rod McDowell and junior D.J. Howard the competition.

But if he listens closely, Brooks can hear the footsteps of two talented, sizable running backs coming this fall, Tyshon Dye (6-0 200) and Wayne Gallman (6-1 195).

He came to Clemson around 180 pounds on the scale, and has boosted that to 190 in a little over a year on campus. Brooks’ goal for August? 200, but it won’t be easy.

“I’ve been lean all my life,” said Brooks. “I don’t know if it’s going to come with age. I’ve been eating the way I’m supposed to. I’ve been working out the way I’m supposed to.”

He hopes to have the advantage the extra size brings when taking on defenders this fall.

“I got to get my weight up,” Brooks said. “We got some nice-size linebackers and those guys are strong. With me coming in at 190 and they’re sitting at 230, they’re benching twice as much as I’m benching.

“That’s a matchup they’re going to stand me up every time.”

Working this summer, Brooks says he will hit the weight room hard for those 10 pounds.

“I just have to keep working hard to get to my max,” he said. “I know the potential that I have. I don’t think I’ve put forth everything I can give yet.

“Trying to work so I can put forth everything that I have.”

How do you know what kind of strength gains come with that 10-15 pound of muscle? It's most likely even more muscle since he has probably leaned up a bit with the intensity of conditioning. He has got time to put on weight
