About to kick out another proposal

May 11, 2022, 8:16 AM

So I works for weeks and weeks on a proposal, a big un. Essentially, 15 or so people tell me what needs to go in the estimate and I compile it all in Excel.

There are 4 worksheets that all of the pricing goes into that total about 3500 rows and 26 columns wide....so 91,000 cells.

I send it out for "review" and the only feedback I get is "this one summary table isn't matching"....yeah, I knew that, I wasn't finished. Butt no one says "Hey, there is an error right here that will impact the price".

This one is over $500M. And no one found a mistake. That means no one looked at it. I spent about 70 minutes last night checking my own work and found about 20 small errors that totaled $1M in adds.

I hope I don't screw up. Fortunately, this is CPFF...so even if I do screw it up, there isn't a ton of risk.

Errors if you like. I’m kind of a big deal now with excel.

I'm shocked that you're downplaying the risk of CPFF.

May 11, 2022, 10:24 AM

there was a project i worked on at [@McLovin's previous employer] that for any change < $1mil, we didn't even have to put the change order in front of the client....just do it, and tell'em about it later

One, very recently, we had a value engineering workshop. The goal was to see if we could CUT $400 million (yes, $0.4 billion) out of the project.

$1mil to them is like your or I deciding if we really need that new shirt or not.

I've written thousands of pages of documents for my firm, that I'm pretty sure no one reads.

not making mistakes? That would be my first suggestion.

same things happen to me, it's frustrating

May 11, 2022, 9:29 AM

send a set of construction drawings or specs out to dozens of people to review, might get 1 or 2 responses back. I'm not looking for 8 hours of intense review, just 30 minutes of a fresh set of eyes on the thing would be AWESOME.

To the point that I sneak in INTENTIONAL mistakes, just to see if people are actually reviewing, or even lightly scanning. Something egregiously wrong that someone with no knowledge whatsoever would catch, like a misspell in the title block, or a number in the cost estimate that makes absolutely no sense (like 1000 toilets instead of the actual 10).

That weeds out quickly who is a total undependable waste of time.

Nobody wants to shoulder responsibility anymore

Lay out the plan and ask for feedback and everybody is like "sure, whatever you think is best"

Then when the plan doesn't work as well as expected everybody is like "why aren't you good at your job?"

I'm the type that I don't care who has the best idea. I just care that the best idea is used.

Yep. Our office used to put one or two completely ridiculous details in the drawings for just that purpose. Like, a schematic on how to gift wrap a Christmas present, or a Schedule of Possible Barbeque Sauces.

I read somewhere that Van Halen used to demand a bowl of only brown M&M's in their hotel rooms to see if their contracts were being fully read.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yes, actually to remove the Brown M&Ms

May 11, 2022, 10:47 AM

but you are right, it was a trigger to them to see if the promoter had read their rider.
