Watching a replay of the A&M/ LSU game

Dec 18, 2012, 8:44 PM

LSU's offense in the first half was not remotely impressive. In fact, they didn't score until there was about a minute and a half left in the first half. They ended up winning 24-19, and we all know A&M's a good team, but A&M's very average to below average defense held them in check for a long time.

Also, I was surprised to see that Manziel did not look impressive at all throwing the ball.

What most people are worried about is LSU's defense.

We know the offense isn't good. But even still, we made Dylan Thompson look like a freaking superstar. Don't be surprised if Mettenberger throws for 300 yards.

as usual, it's not the teams' strengths that determine...

the outcome of the game, it's usually the weaker units. I'm not worried about our offense against their defense. We will score some points. But I think if we hold them to just a couple TDs, we'll almost certainly win the game.

I thought the same thing about us against SC

Dec 18, 2012, 9:14 PM

and LSU's defense stat wise is better in many areas than SC

I think the issue is how good can our D play. On this side it is weakness versus weakness. Put us on O and them on D it is stregnth vs stregnth. should be interesting

Why do you think A&M's Defense is below average?

Dec 18, 2012, 8:47 PM

They seemed to hold offenses in check just enough for the offense to win games.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they're #66 in total defense...

Dec 18, 2012, 8:52 PM

and they allowed just 22 yards less per game than Clemson did.

It was an away game at Kyle Field, one of the toughest road games in college football. LSU made extremely impressive adjustments to hold Manziel to 27 yards rushing and force three INT's.

the one int I saw...

Dec 18, 2012, 8:56 PM

at the end of the first half, Manziel just threw a lob right to the LSU player.

I have no doubt that LSU made good adjustments at half time, given that they were down 12-0 with about a minute and a half left in the first half. Either way, they looked terrible on offense.

yup

Good defenses force bad decisions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

not this time...

Dec 18, 2012, 9:01 PM

the WR broke off his route, and Manziel wasn't pressured. He was probably throwing to a spot expecting his receiver to be there.

I watched it last night too and was telling my Coot running

Dec 18, 2012, 9:09 PM

buddy about it tonight. TAMU was wearing them out and then bam!, LSU had a 2 point lead before the half. And, if Johnny Football was just Johnny Manzel that night. He was panicky in the pocket for sure. I don't think their pass rush is as strong as South Carolina. If Tajh gets a little time and Nuk and Sammy will fight to get off the line, we may have a shot.

aww Spud ! say it ain't so , an SC running mate ?

LOL, glad to hear it. I always knew you were a reasonable man.

Enjoy games with a friend, no matter what their color. After all, they are just games.

Hmmmm, I surely thought our D put Dylan Thomas into the heisman race in their last game.

We also gave up a late TD while playing prevent at the end of the game that made it seem closer than it was...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LSU has been 2 different teams

Dec 19, 2012, 12:23 PM

offensively this season (on the road and at home). If they can split the difference with it being a neutral site, we win easily.

Even if our offense struggles, I still think we win due to our defensive dominance. Offense will wear Clemson's defense down.

Close game at halftime, and we pull away in the second half.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My only concern is we might be tight after the break

Dec 19, 2012, 12:58 PM

Our O didn't look all that impressive at first after the bye week. Some blown assignments and a lot of missed throws / passes.

Re: Watching a replay of the A&M/ LSU game

I've watched every LSU game this year, and their offense has greatly improved since the beginning of the season.

At the beginning of the season, 2 of their best offensive linemen went down with injuries. It took them about halfway through the season to find the right combination of linemen that gave good protection.

After the Alabama game, Mettenberger found his groove and is now somewhat of a passing threat.

LSU's offense is night and day when comparing games at the beginning of the season like against Texas A&M to the end of the season against teams like Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, etc.

They aren't a high-powered, explosive offense that is going to throw a ton of points on the board. But they are similar to Alabama in that they have RB's who can run holes through the defense, and a QB who is "capable" of making great plays, but is normally expected to just "manage" the offense without getting too crazy.

Their offense is a grinding style. They eat up a ton of clock and slow the game down. They are old-school, power football. But now, Mettenberger has found his confidence and there is also the threat of the deep ball now.

I know the Texas A&M game makes you guys feel all warm and fuzzy, but that isn't the same offense that LSU has now.

One thing about this LSU team is that at the beginning of the season, the offense sucked, but the defense was incredible. As the season wore on, the offense got better, but the defense started playing bad because they were feeling the effects of carrying the team for the whole season, and they were wearing down and sputtered to the finish.

But with a month off, the defense will be rested and ready to play. And an offense and improved immensely by the end of the season will only get better with a month to prepare.

I think for this bowl game, it will be the first time this LSU team has a complete team on both sides of the ball. They are going to be tough.
