Trump would not be relevant this year if Obama had done a decent job. If the country felt we were on the right track, Hillary would be winning by a landslide. Fact is, a lot of Dems are giving Trump a look, because they don't favor the candidates their party has offered up. Plus, Hillary may soon be indicted. Where will that leave the Dems for 2016? Biden???

Mar 4, 2016, 3:19 PM

... within the Republican national leadership & money men. They've been using that stuff for decades to rally their base, whack their opponents & generate wedge issues to use against the Democrats. The reason they're trying so hard to tear him down is because he's not a by-the-book conservative ideologue, because they can't control him & because they fear he's going to lose them the election.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trump understands the Republican voter base

Mar 4, 2016, 1:38 AM

... better than the Republican Party itself, & better than most of its elected officials for certain. Sure he's an embarrassment, but he's just saying explicitly & out loud what most Republican politicians would rather communicate obliquely & by dog-whistle.

I've always understood that the authoritarian impulse runs deep in American society. Trump is tapping into a rich vein here. I've also come to understand just how dumbed-down American political discourse has become - it's become painfully clear that most voters don't know or care much about policy per se. Donald Trump is a bull$h!t artist par excellence - he just makes up policy on the fly & he's obviously winging it when he talks about religion. But his voters don't care - they fall for him because he voices their anger, frustrations & racial prejudice.

It's been funny these past few days, as Trump continues to steamroll toward the nomination, to watch the Republican Party's national leadership flail & grasp at anything to try to stop him. But in Donald Trump, the Republicans are simply reaping what they've sown.

Well said. Trump's just coming right out and saying plainly what the GOP has conveyed in 50 years of dog whistling. Atwater, Rove, Reagan, the Bushes, every RWNJ in Congress and the legislatures...they've all had a hand in laying the groundwork for Trump. The only thing that surprises me is how long it's taken working-class Republicans to figure out that the GOP elites have been paying lip service to their concerns. They don't give a tinker's ### about your issues; they just want your votes. After half a century, you're finally starting to catch on. Maybe.

Grrrl, and the alternative that you and your liberal ilk have to offer is one of either Hillary or Bernie (one is a congenital liar and the other is a socialist) after coming off 7+ years of Obama. One shouldn't throw stones when they live in a glass house. As I mentioned in another post, I am not enamored with the Repub. candidates but they are far, far better than what the Dems. have to offer.

Re: Trump understands the Republican voter base

Mar 4, 2016, 6:15 AM [ in reply to Trump understands the Republican voter base ]

I continue to be amazed at most of the dialogue on this site and in the media is about the implosion of the Republican party with very little said about the party on the left that has as it's two candidates a congenital liar in Hillary and an admitted socialist in Sanders. Have you folks listened to these two wackos talk about what they want to do to American?

Let me suggest some books to read on the Clintons:
1. The Case Against Hillary Clinton - Peggy Noonan
2. The Agenda - Bob Woodward (A Democrat)
3. The Choice - Bob Woodward (A Democrat)
4. Condi versus Hillary - #### Morris
5. Year of the Rat - Edward Temperlake
6. First in his Class - David Mariniss
7. High Crimes and Misdemeaners - Ann Coulter
8. The Seduction of Hillary Clinton - David Brock

Folks, the Clintons are not the kind of people we need to be leading this country, especially at this particular time in our history. I am not enamored with the Republican choices either but they are far better than what the left has to offer. Just saying!!

Now back to college sports!!!

Re: Trump understands the Republican voter base

Mar 4, 2016, 8:00 PM [ in reply to Re: Trump understands the Republican voter base ]

There's only one credible, impartial source on your list: David Maraniss. The others: Peggy Noonan, GOP speechwriter; #### Morris, Faux News; Edward Timperlake, conservative columnist fact-checked and debunked by journalist Lars-Erik Nelson; mAnn Coulter, right-wing shill. David Brock repudiated his hatchet job on Hillary Clinton at least 15 years ago. As for Bob Woodward, he is not only NOT a Democrat, but his glory days during Watergate are LONG behind him: he hasn't done any investigative reporting in at least 30 years. He's not a reporter, he's a stenographer--he finds people in DC who will talk to him (usually because they have an axe to grind) and writes down what they tell him. He doesn't investigate anything any more. Got anything real to offer us?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Trump understands the Republican voter base

Mar 5, 2016, 9:04 AM

Grrrl;, if you don't think that Bob Woodward is a Democratic leaning reporter/writer/stenographer, then I don't think you are paying attention. Listen to him on any of the talk shows he appears on and read his books. As to David Maraniss being the only credible, impartial source on my list, then I suggest you read his book and see if it differs much from what the other writers have said about the Clintons. One must read authors of varying political persuasion and then do some investigative research on your own to reach accurate conclusions. I have done that over the years and the Clintons still come out as sleazy, dishonest, self centered people that are really a disgrace to this country. Bill had a few good moments but Hillary has never done anything credible in her entire adult life - NOTHING, and she continues on this same journey.

You go ahead and vote for Clinton, but my wife and I will make a different choice, even though that choice may not be what we would like to see, and that is a person that really cares about this country and getting it back to the principles that it was founded upon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You sound like one of those guys who tells his wife

Mar 5, 2016, 4:15 PM

Grrrl, nothing personnel, but being a liberal and saying you are not brain washed is just ridiculous to say. Do you really watch Fox News or do you just listen to liberal versions on other news sources, say what Fox News has reported? At age 77 I have experienced a lot of political BS in my life from both sides, but hands down, you liberals take the cake for not really knowing the principles that this country was founded upon. Incidentally, how proud are you of the two candidates that you Dems. have offered in the presidential race.

As to my wife who is from Pendleton, we have been married for 52 years and ,no, I don't tell her who to vote for. You see, she is a conservative and is smart enough to make up her own mind about political issues.

Hell, they wanted Trump to garuntee that he wouldn't run third party if he didn't win where is their end of the bargain? Anyone that believes we have a choice and these things aren't rigged is a fool. We should all be in the street with pitchforks, burn Washington to the ground and start over.

I haven't voted Republican before, but I really want to...the problem is I can't find a candidate I'd vote for. To me, it's the Republican Party's own fault it's self-destructing. For years, it's lamented the thought that "we've lost America" while remaining married to a vast majority of the religious morality B.S. which somehow became so linked to the party. Heck, any true Conservative who wants less government intervention in people's lives should be 100% for gay marriage, but they still fumble about and try to sidestep the question when asked about it.

Maybe this is the wake up call the Republican Party needed, and will be seen as the moment the party's social side pushed for less government intervention--as a conservative movement should--rather than pushed a Christian agenda.

Romney is the ###. We wouldn't be in this mess if he hadn't been such a horrible candidate. He and the other establishment should shut their mouths. They have had their chance and blew it. Obama has embarrassed all your "die hard Republican" candidates. Milton Freedman is rolling in his grave because of the "die hard Republicans". Such power hungry hypoctites.

Grrrl, since you seem to think you are an expert on politics and the issue of racism, and being a democrat, can you dentify the party to which these folks belonged to or supported:

George Wallace, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Barrack Obama, Charlie Rangel, John Conyers, Maxine Waters, etc. I don't believe those racist were Repubs., were they? No doubt we have some also but I didn't want you to continue to sit on your self righteous " high horse" concerning racism.
