Brian Bresee & DJ - biggest busts

2
8

Apr 21, 2023, 8:19 AM

So, I know this may not be a popular or PC opinion, but here it is…

I think Brian Bresee and DJ the two biggest busts since Roscoe Crosby.

And before everyone piles on about Bresee and the personal issues and health - I get it.

But, objectively he came in with as much talent and physical ability as just about anyone we have ever had but he didn’t perform on the field - plain and simple.

He didn’t take care of his body got way out of shape and he will be lucky if he’s drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round. And if you told any of us he wasn’t going to leave Clemson a top 10 pick when he got here, I think we would have all laughed because he was that good!

DJ’s situation has been discussed ad nauseam

Fire/flame away!

recruiting rankings. Kelly was a 4 star just like Kyle Parker was a 4 star.

Bresee was a #1 player in the country style caliber. Roscoe was also supposed to be this unbelievable talent but injuries plagued him as did Willy Korn. So we'll never really know how good they could have been b/c their bodies got wrecked. Bresee could have easily returned this year and dominated if he was good enough to but we'll never know. But thus is football. This happens to alot of teams.

Remember that run against VT?

Similar to ETNs breakout run against the same team.

"An embarrassment of riches", Fowler said.

Let's remember we're currently living in the best era of Clemson football. By a long shot.

Let's go Tigers! Spot the ball!

The ETN run you're thinking of was against Louisville, not VT. Understandable mistake to make though. It's easy to get confused when trying to remember exactly which 2017 night game against a team hosting gameday whose spirits we crushed before the fourth quarter even started contained which event.

Kind of tough to label him a bust when he threw for 7000 yards and 50 TD in less than 2 full seasons. He wasn't a fit at Clemson, but he was very far from being a bust.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most definitely a bust based on potential.

Hard to say a guy who was a productive starter when healthy is an all time bust.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Brian Bresee & DJ - biggest busts

Apr 21, 2023, 8:33 AM

I would argue that 9 solo tackles in 10 games as a starting DT is not very productive.

I do not think it’s remotely commensurate with his God given ability.

I hope he absolutely crushes it in the NFL. I think he could have benefited a ton from another year at Clemson though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why the extra effort to trash a Clemson player?

1

Apr 21, 2023, 12:29 PM

Kid loved Clemson but unfortunately didn't quite get settled into a healthy career at Clemson.

Could have obviously benefitted from staying another year, but dont blame him for moving into the next phase of life. Will be a great pro. Always a Tiger for sure. Absolutely no need whatsoever to try and shoot holes in his Clemson career.

I never consider anyone that had injury issues a bust. For example I don't consider Willy Korn a bust because he was done after the shoulder injury. I remember someone posting a video of his throwing motion before and after injury. The after wasn't natural.

(Actually, Crosby had similar issues to deal with...)

Mike Bellamy (and his Chosen One tattoo) would have to be considered an epic bust.

Re: Brian Bresee & DJ - biggest busts

Apr 21, 2023, 8:52 AM

Until you see whether Breese is drafted, and when, you cannot say he was a bust. His situation is so different because all the injuries and his sister's situation but you you must have selected memory.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Brian Bresee & DJ - biggest busts

Apr 21, 2023, 11:30 AM

Fair enough. You are right about waiting to see where he goes vs what all the so called experts say.

As to the circumstances, I acknowledged all that. But I’m talking strictly and objectively about God given ability versus performance on the football field.

10 games started as a jr at DT with 9 solo tackles. That’s subpar production from a guy that’s got endless potential.

No one wants to give DJ slack (nor should they) for his parents getting divorced or playing through injuries. I think there is a bit of a double standard here though. To me it’s easier to look at the play on the field and the stats. QB is easier to see as a fan, but the play at DT wasn’t stellar

Also, it’s “selective memory” not “selected memory”

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Getting a job in the NFL isn't a "bust".

True, he was the #1 rated player out of HS, but you can't base your assessment off of that very subjective rating. At the end of the day, he will go in the 1st or 2nd round and he is still going to make millions playing in the NFL.

DJ - maybe. Bresee - not even close.

Being hampered by injuries and a tragic family death do not constitute a bust.

Jamie Harper, Mike Bellamy, and Tony Steward were all bigger busts than Bresee

oh yeah - I always forget he had that shoulder injury / misdiagnosis.

Even on an apples to apples comparison Korn would be a bigger bust than Bresse. Maybe due to the difference in position but Korn was thought to change the direction of the program

Re: Brian Bresee & DJ - biggest busts

Apr 21, 2023, 9:21 AM

Glad you realize that the Bresee take is unpopular, there's a reason for that. Solid freshman season starting every game, and then an unlucky knee injury the next year and a family tragedy beginning of season the following. Insensitive take for sure.

Now DJ...you are correct. One of the bigger busts in history, and although family dynamics were a precursor to his drop off. We can't use that as an excuse.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Family issues shouldn’t just be an excuse for Bresee and not DJ.

Apr 21, 2023, 9:26 AM

While DJ didn’t lose a sibling, he did go through a significant loss when his parents divorced. The emotional stress from that for a young man his age can be significant, so I don’t think that should be minimized.

It wasn’t as publicized as Bresee’s situation, but I’m not sure it was any less of a stressor for him.

That same logic for Bresee could apply to Xavier Thomas as well. He's still playing for one more year, so too soon to call a bust. But that same logic applies.

Look, I agree that my take lacks empathy and all that, but you cannot disagree with it based on data and facts.

He’s not the only football player that’s faced adversity and injuries - that’s all part of life.

But when you look at performance on the football field (which is all an NFL team looks at) - the production wasn’t there.

I can think of several bigger 5 star busts

Apr 21, 2023, 10:01 AM

Hunter Johnson
Bowman
A couple more depending on which site you use to determine the 5* ratings. I think Ladson was a 5* somewhere. Shaq Smith was a 5* on Rivals.

XT is probably more of a DL bust than Bresee. Bresee was productive when he was on the field.
