of Wake Forest.
I also thought we matched up well with them and would win by at least 10.
On this side of it, I think it's worth asking why so many of us were wrong.
I felt like this was a good matchup for us, and thought our defense would hold them under 30.
I thought our offense would be able to score, but wasn't sure that we would be able to get more than 30 on them.
I think we were all surprised that our offense scored so much, and also that our defense gave up so many points.
We have plenty to work on, but we are 4-0 and that's exactly where we wanted to be.

Just like palming and double dribbling can be called on any possession. Don’t even get me started on a foul or charging.

Two things...
Sep 26, 2022, 11:12 AM
|
|
First, the defense was never able to make Hartman uncomfortable in the pocket. I said last week that if the defense did not get good pressure on him, he'd likely have a big day. He threw for 300+ yards against Clemson last year even though he was sacked 7 times.
Second, the Clemson DB's had a bad day. OK...a really bad day. That said, part of that is on the coaches for not adjusting schemes sooner. You simply can't leave your DB's on an island if the DL/LB's aren't getting pressure on the QB, especially a QB as good as Hartman.

A ticker stat following the game mentioned that Hartman's 6 TD passes came on a defensive blitz. Was that actually the case? Crazy stat if true and telling as to how challenged our secondary was Saturday.
That was an absolutely critical, must win game for Wake, and they played like it. Thankfully we played just a bit better. Always great to learn from the tape after a close win like that versus the alternative.
Go Tigers.

When your only pressure is 2 QB hurries and 3 starters missing from your secondary, that definitely is not a recipe for success against a really good QB. And then add how long it took us to adjust by trying something different.

Maybe a little closer since a road game, just nothing like this. We murdered their mesh last year but couldn’t get to it this year.
We outmatch them athletically by a wide margin and it should’ve shown on the field. There were moments this showed on offense, but we looked ordinary on D.

Here's the current problems:
Sep 26, 2022, 11:20 AM
|
|
Defense
1) We aren't getting in the opponent's backfield enough. This hurts us in the passing game, and against Wake it let them have 5 minutes to complete a handoff, helping their run game.
2) We aren't good in man coverage. Injuries, inexperience, etc. We are just weak there.
Offense
1) Our running game just isn't consistent enough; however, this is getting better
2) DJ looked a lot better and had the guts and leadership to get the win, but he's still drifting out of the back of the pocket and taking too long to get rid of the ball. Our WRs won their battles this week which was huge, but they shouldn't have had the battles if the ball was there on time. That will hurt us against NC State.

Defensive backfield decimated by injuries and having to start freshmen might have played into it, ya think?
Wake's offense is the worst matchup for an inexperienced defense. They've got a 6th-year QB, experienced wideouts, and literally the most experienced OL in the country.
Hopefully we get some guys back this week, but even if we don't, we match up better with NCSU than Wake given the style of play and secondary shortcomings.

We scored about the number of points that I thought we would. Wake scored a lot more.
Why? inability to get pressure (for whatever reason) like we did the last time we played them and horrid DB play (even though we had starters out its still not a good explanation).

Everyone here knows that you are only going to post things pro Brownell, not necessarily pro Clemson basketball, and then negative things about our football team. So don’t be “shocked” or “surprised” if people turn all your posts back to basketball. The way you handle things here begs for that. Then don’t be disingenuous and turn what everyone says back to your excuse list. Obviously you are now trolling and manipulating to whatever you want to happen. Now that being said. We had one weakness Saturday and it was our defensive backs. Shouldn’t matter (hence not an excuse), and we should’ve been ready to go anyways. But I have to say two years in a row now, that Wake QB is legit and picked apart our weakness. He was very good. Offense did a lot of good things but was still up and down. A little less down and we should have hung 70 on them. Unfortunately not a pretty win. However, it was a win.

They played a great offensive game against us.
but they struggled with Liberty last week and will most likely lose a couple of head scratcher games (like UNC) and also lose some toss ups.

The Clemson DB's seemed slow which surprised me. They were a lot of times just getting out run and not keeping up with Wake's WRs. Plus, that was about as consistently bad DB technique as I've seen, and it never really changed the entire game. Good grief turn around and look for the ball.
DJ, Shipley and the OL (with no substitutions) played their tails off. Our WR made some bigtime catches. Wakes's DBs were getting beat but by less of a margin than ours so DJ made some money throws or Clemson loses.

No one knew ahead of time we weren't going to have 3 starters in the secondary. That was clearly the biggest difference on Saturday. This week will be an even tougher test and let's hope we have everyone available.

Missing key personnel on D and WF taking advantage
Sep 26, 2022, 12:37 PM

of it was the main reason it was close. There are certain positions that can be exploited if starting an inexperienced player...we had a couple in the secondary...especially true when facing a high caliber player like Hartman. Seems like he has been around for about 10 years.
Our inability to pressure the QB gave him time to pick us apart. Their strategy of just throwing it at the freshman worked brilliantly; either getting a long completion or a PI. All you had to do was refer to the Louisiana game to realize we'd be in trouble if we didn't get some DB's back.
Was not surprising to me at all that it was a shoot-out considering injuries. Just glad to get that one in the books and behind us. Much better defense is coming to Death Valley this weekend.

I predicted a 55 - 17 blowout but I made one assumption and that was all injured DBs and XT would be playing. When I saw the updated list before the game, I knew it was going to be closer.
The bottom line is the Tigers won missing 3 top DBs and a top level DE and are now 4 - 0. I assuming all the players that missed the Wake game will be back this week and it's a 38 - 20 Tiger victory.

they did. They were lost and exposed. That's a huge problem if we don't get it fixed, and there's a lot of work to do there. If we can, however, build on this, learn from it, and get it fixed, we could still have a very successful season. This week against NCST will tell a lot.

People don’t realize how good hartman is
Sep 26, 2022, 1:31 PM
|

Looks like the best qb in the conference. I don’t know where the draft experts have him, but his stock is rising. Kid looks like a legit nfl qb.
Our db’s pretty much couldn’t cover the receivers they were matched up with, like they just weren’t capable. Some of that is definitely due to guys who were missing. If we have our best guys in the secondary, maybe you can take a td or two off the board for wake and we win a little more comfortably . . . but emphasis on “a little,” because, again, the main reason that game was closer than people thought is that hartman is really that good. A lot of those balls it doesn’t matter who’s playing defense. Glad we don’t have to play wake again this year

I'm certainly happy we won but we definitely handled them easier last season and that wasn't exactly a great Clemson team. Its good to see DJ playing well but its hard to see that victory as some kind of proof that we are suddenly contenders or that we are even any better, as a team, than last season.

I think we vastly underestimated the depth they had, they were the deeper team. This year is alot like last year except the injuries are on Defense this year. The young dbs got humbled and that will serve the Tigers well going forward. Davis was looking back at his safety frequently, Mukuba was probably the most missed player on defense. Clemson really needs to recruit more top tier safeties bc the way Venables and Goodwin play defense those guys are the major wild card and asked to make alot of plays off instinct(borderline free Lance position) that's why you would see Clemson fans cussing Tanner Muse even though he was 1v1 vs #1 wrs like Jamar Chase.

I predicted the Tigers would win by 21 against WF. I was obviously wrong. Dabo is correct. We are getting everyone’s best shot. Coaches know that to advance they have to beat Clemson. They are studying game film and devising schemes all summer. Preparation for a Clemson game is not the same as a normal prep. Give the Tigers credit for winning the great majority of these matchups, regardless of the point spread.
