Youth Baseball aficionados

Aug 17, 2017, 1:11 PM

It's that time of year when Little League Workd Series is on non stop.

Here is my ?

Are these kids any good or do the good players play travel ball and skip the rec leagues at this age? Just curious

These are Travel Baseball teams. I would say

98% of these kids all play Travel Ball together.

I only say this because I coach a Travel Baseball team that was able to separate out and play Little League on different teams within rec. We then put them all back on same All Star team, won district and lost to Northwood last year in Greenville for State Championship. The team we played from Northwood was built much like ours. We saw them on Travel Circuit throughout Spring leading into State Tourney.

The only thing Travel Ball has done is hurt the overall Rec Depts. However, teams that are "community" Travel Ball teams can and do put together these All Star teams that compete in Williamsport. All you have to do is follow the strict rules Little League puts out, and they are strict. I had to turn in more paperwork for All stars than I did when I bought a house.

Doesn't diminish the skill level at this event. Still fun to watch 11 and 12 years old play.

Depends on what part of the country you are in.

Many areas they play under different youth organizations like Dizzy Dean.

Atlanta is a youth baseball hotbed. Very few Little League organizations exist. Most recs are affiliated with Dizzy Dean. The best players play travel and not Little League.

Little League rules are very strange. These are 12-14 year olds playing on fields that travel 10 year olds play on (particularly the basepaths & infield). Way too small. Plus because the field is tiny there is no lead offs & stealing. Most youth organizations start this around 10.
