Time to face the music

College FB is totally controlled by TV broadcasters who pay the millions to the conferences. All that money going to each SEC and BIG school, comes from ESPN (Disney) and Fox. It's time Clemson and Clemson fans realize that fact. And that being the case, the ACC is the last place you want to be if you want to
be a serious FB program. It is either the SEC or the BIG. And we have not been invited to join either conference. How will our being in either conference add value to the total payout in the contract? Each school currently in the SEC or BIG is not going to be willing to take less money just so Clemson and FSU can be a part of the conference. If any new school joining the conference cannot add appx. 100 million each to the value of the contract, why would the conference want them? You can only televise so many games on a given day and in prime time.

We are so great, we open our season against DUKE at Wallace Wade Stadium. That should really be a great draw for viewers. And then we follow that up with the next two games against two power houses, Charleston Southern and Florida Atlantic. And we are blitching about not getting ESPN to pay us 70 million for broadcast rights?

I understand your point but don't totally agree with your premise about our schedule. The Duke game will be the only game on Labor Day after the first full weekend of college football. People will have had a nice long weekend and be happy that college football is back again and they have a Monday night game to watch. The ratings should be good and whoever is covering it will probably be happy with the numbers.

The other two games let us ease into our schedule and break in our new offense. I think this prep time will be important as it helps us prepare for a tough schedule the rest of the way. Personally, I'm glad this isn't the year we open with Georgia again. We will be better prepared for that in 2024.

Duke was pretty good last year and are returning most of their starters. Not an opening game to take lightly.

I agree and think it will be much closer than many might think. First games are always iffy and can go funny ways if you don't play well.

Jawja and Bama starting with new QBs too. Definitely would be interesting.

I agree that the first three games are good for us as a team getting prepared for the season.

My point was that for selling this as a part of a tv contract this is as bad as it gets. We don't have three marque games on our schedule that would make up for these 3 as far as a selling point for a 70 million dollar tv contract payout. If we are telling the ACC that we are the selling point for the ACC and TV revenue and we deserve a bigger share, this sure does not help.

You've got a much improved FSU who will potentially be Top 5 ranked pre-season, a better Miami with how well they recruited the last couple of years, a ND team with a new hotshot QB who played well at Wake, a UNC team with one of the top returning passers in the country, and probably an improved SC team. And then you lead off with GA in 2024. All of these could easily be ranked teams at some point next year.

I don't know man, I think that is a schedule with pretty good value to talk about.

Pretty impressive viewing draw for Clemson considering the Tigers are a couple years removed from the CFP spotlight.

When you peel off all the layers it's really about "what can you do for me". The scary part is Clemson is in such a small TV market we may never make the cut with the high entry cost.

He must mean the Big 12. If they got a Big 10 offer, they would take it. I don’t think that the Big 10 is interested in daytime commute schools.

It’s not at all about your “TV market”. Do you think these games are only televised in Greenville? It’s about national TV ratings. Clemson draws viewers from across the nation, ESPN would not want to lose Clemson or FSU, If they fear that they will push the SEC to take them. If they don’t fear it they won’t. The only questions are, is Fox interested enough to push the Big10 to go after us, and can the GOR be voided.

Jan 24, 2023, 1:21 AM

See the Tigers win over Houston or Memphis State or Yale or Maryland or Navy or
Arkansas or hundreds of other teams rather than Taxidermy Tech or Podunk U.
Death Valley would like it even more. Fans aren’t going to pay the price to see the Tigers play S.C. State

This will never change however.

Clemson, Tenn, and Ohio St were all Top 5 games of the week 5 times last year. In addition Clemson-Tenn Orange bowl ranked 6th in post season/3rd in non CFP Bowl games. We were Top 10 2 more and Top 12 another 2 weeks. That is significant. We now have a considerable national following that would be attractive to another conference. The question is are the SEC and B1G at all interested in expanding more? Will there end up being 3 or 4 Super Conferences instead of P5 even if 2 are not as powerful? Guess we will see. ACC needs to pursue ND and maybe rob a Ok St/Big 12 or PAC team or two.

Your premise that Clemson would not add value is incorrect. Especially when you consider the BIG.
Clemson would be the only southern school. Adding viewers from the south who previously ignored the big.
The southern footprint gives team, school, recruiting advantages to the big where they did not have it before.
It also gives Clemson a great recruiting tool. Families looking for an alternative to sec - who maybe grew up BIG fans - can come to Clemson to watch their children play - rather than head up to cold weather country.
Athletes would be able to stay closer to home. Stay in warmer weather.
Clemson is also now a national brand, not a simple SC one as you generally alluded.

So, to me, the BIG is where we would gain the most.

I don’t see much value in the SEC compared to BIG.

Personally, I prefer going to away games vs sec, but maybe I need to rethink that. Penn state, Iowa, mich, mich st, and yes - even Charlie Bauman U. (Btw, I was at the Gator Bowl when Woody lost his mind).

Just my opinion anyway.

Conferences are going away. We are headed towards

1

an NFL type two league set up. Clemson will be part of that 48-64 team set up.

who opens their season with home games against Tenn-Martin, Ball St., USuC, and UAB. I bet ESPN is slobbering all over those games.

You add schools, the contract gets renegotiated

you really think the B1G schools are looking to add more PAC schools and take less money for themselves?
